Brook Bergelon put her head down in the cool water, letting her unusually long stringy but soft hair flow around her. It was clear, cool, refreshing water, the type of water that you would really wish for on a really hot summer's day. And that was true, the day that Brook was putting her head in the water. She liked these types of days. It was the days without worry or care or responsibility. She knew, oh she knew, that soon summer would turn into fall, making all of the green leaves turn into their pretty yellows and oranges and reds, and she would have to go to school. But not now. Now is the time of relaxation and quiet games of chess at midnight. Now is the time of not getting up at 5 a. m. Now is the time of hanging out with friends. "Oi Brook!" Brook smiled. That was Basil Smiles. They were raised together, at Sunny Hills Orphanage. Her name was Brook because she came from Brook Street. Creek was her last name in English, but Mrs. Do put her last name in french, which was somethin' la Bergelon. She made it Bergelon, it was the easiest to pronounce. Basil was named basil because he was found in a box filled with basil. Smiles was because everyone would smile whenever they saw him, even strangers. "Brook! I found an old map! It-whattaya doin?" Brook sat up, taking her head out of the water, laughing. "It's hot outside, what would you do?" "I don't know, but if you must, you must." "Oi! You two!" Meli Gamestrip's voice rang out, but it wasn't angry. Meli was thier other best friend. They (Brook, Basil, and Meli) were raised together, and they were inseparable. Meli's name was because she was found in a baby carriage next to a game store with a strip of paper that said Her name is Meli. Take care of her. They sat down beside the rivulet, talking like old friends. Because they were old friends. And then all too soon, the supper bell was ringing.

Brook, Basil, and Meli raced each other to the wonderful smell of the dining room. Spaghetti and meatballs with homemade tomato sauce was supper, and it was delicious. Brook was skinny and short for her age (Eleven) and with long, stringy brown hair. A lot of people would (and will) call her ugly, with scabs on her knees that were a bit too wobbly, and her long fingers that were double-jointed and a bit too long, and long fingernails that were always painted aqua blue. But she looked and was, well cared for, with her light pink t-shirt and jeans that were ripped(not for style). She had soft but sharp hazel eyes and her hair was usually pulled back into a braid. Basil had short dark brown curly hair and soft dark brown eyes. He, like Brook, was skinny and short for his age. He always had dirt somewhere on him and although his fingers weren't as long as Brook's, he had just as long fingernails that always had dirt or grease under them, always a fine line of it, no matter that they all bathed every day, twice a day. He mostly wore jean shorts (even in the winter) and a blue t-shirt that had a big smiley face on it. Meli, on the other hand, had normal-sized black hair, normal-sized fingers, and nails, but she was also skinny and short, but taller than the other two. Her eyes were like chips of ice, but they were always warm and happy. She usually had her hair down but put it in a ponytail every now and then. She usually wore leggings and a black t-shirt that had the word Superstar in glittery silver letters. They were all allowed in the kitchen where Miss Molly would let them have free reign whether she was there or not, as long as they didn't explode the kitchen or make a big mess. And that kitchen was always gleaming, no matter the mess that they made. Even when they made their signature peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies (which were very messy to make, thank you very much). They enjoyed the quiet, warm kitchen, which always smelled like cinnamon and lemons. Brook especially enjoyed it when the smell of something baking would greet her when she came down the stairs to the kitchen to bake or just simply say hello to Miss Molly.

"Are you going to just sit there waiting for midnight? Just to play chess?" Brook sighed. Meli could be annoying sometimes. But then again, Brook reminded herself, I must be annoying to Basil and Meli sometimes. "Yes, Meli. I am just going to sit here on my bed and wait for midnight so we can all play chess." "Well, tonight I have a different idea. I'm gonna go down into the bottom basement." Brook fell off her bed in shock. No one was allowed down in the bottom basement no one. "If your gonna go, I am too. You don't know what's down there!." "Now Basil's gonna come."
