((Hi! This is a chapter from a WIP of mine, currently called Rare End. It's still in early development/planning stages, but this chapter is great because it sets up the world, the powers, and the major event that triggers everything. It will most likely end up being the first chapter.
Rare end itself is set in the future, where the "mythical" creatures from centuries ago have finally decided to come out of hiding and take back the world that used to be theirs. As such, the world is divided between these creatures and the humans that refuse to submit to their will again. Within the creature's world are endless clan and faction rivalries, and within the human's world are constant fear and bitterness. The creation of Princess, who floats somewhere between human and not, only further drives the wedge between the two less-than-ideal worlds. Is a peaceful resolution even possible? Or is every choice wrong in this quest for the good ending?
Fair warning: this is a LONG one. Like, 13 pages long. If you read the whole thing, I applaud and thank you immensely. Lol.))

Perhaps I shouldn't have done this. Always, I am plagued with doubts and concerns. But none of that matters, now. It's fine. She's alive. That's all I care about.
The spell to create her had been a complicated one in many regards, the first being the atmospheric conditions. The sky had to be clear, not a cloud in sight for the portion of the celestial sphere that shone down on our current location. The moon had to be full, and bright enough to cast shadows.
So many crystals had to be present – ones of power, love, and protection. A lot of flowers, too, that symbolized the same thing. Many things could go wrong. Negative energy could have easily corrupted it, had I not had the right combination of elements. These crystals had to be powerful, infused with actual magic. They couldn't be the placebo crystals that non-magics sell.
Winter supplied the best conditions, as the book I read advised the reader to perform the spell with snow on the ground. Snow reflects the moon and starlight in such a way that the ground doesn't absorb the extra power, meaning more can be caught by the spell materials.
A clear winter night was predicted. Snow blanketed the ground. The lunar schedule told me the moon that night would be full and bright. Fate, I thought. It must have been fate. I would never get this chance again, as far as I could tell, so I took it.
I wasn't sure how my clan knew this spell. In fact, I don't think I'll ever be sure. It's a strange spell, one with a strange goal and a strange outcome, but that's the beauty of being part of the Amaranth Clan. Everything is odd. Everything is weird. But if not for us, I wouldn't have it. I wouldn't have her.
Spells are never easy, but I had been stocking up on materials beforehand. This was a spell I wanted to do for a long time. That dreaded doubt and uncertainty plagued my mind, but I fought through it with everything I had. I needed this. I needed her.
All my crystals, I already had. These were for the aftermath, for making my creation what I wanted it to be and infusing it with the energy I wanted it to have.
In addition to everything else, I had my potion ingredients. Brewing the potion was the easy part. Anyone could follow simple directions and measure things and mix them together, magic user or non-magic.
By the end of it all, the potion looked like what happens when you boil flour and water, but instead of being a murky whitish color, it was a bright turquoise. Beside the bubbling cauldron rested a low table, and on that table, I had the old, dusty book I had found lodged deep behind my father's desk.
Now, for the part that makes this spell exclusive to the Amaranth Clan.
I had needed a body. A corpse, of a human who had recently died. If I couldn't get that, something similar anatomically to a human would suffice. However, I don't much like the word "suffice." It means it's sufficient, sure, but sufficient is akin to "good enough," and my clan never took "good enough" as acceptable. Besides, the spell would take longer, and be a lot less effective if I used, say, a monkey, which humans are thought to have evolved from, or a pig, who's inner anatomical structure is astoundingly similar to a human.
