Extraordinary

Dani looked at herself in the mirror. 

She saw a failure.

A burden.

A waste of time.

An idiot.

Someone who's worthless.

She opened the first drawer and pulled out her razor. 

She pulled up her shirt sleeves and looked at herself again in the mirror.

She took a deep breath before pressing the razor against her skin. 

She swiped at the already scarred, broken skin.

Again.

And again.

And again.

The crimson colored blood dripping from her forearms covered the bathroom counter. 

Dani looked at herself and smiled. 

Finally, I'm getting what I deserve.

She washed the razor and put it back in the drawer, then cleaned the wounds on her arms.

As she was wiping off the counter, her older sister, Lauren, entered the bathroom.

She immediately engulfed Dani in a hug, and sang to her.

You are worthy, you are smart

You deserve to feel loved

You are way more than enough

You're extraordinary

You are beautiful inside and out

You have a purpose

You are not your past

You are extraordinary

Lauren pulled up Dani's sleeves and traced her scars and newly opened wounds.

She smiled sadly at her younger sister before pulling up her own sleeves.

Her eyes filled up with tears as she gazed down at her old, fading scars.

Though she hadn't said a word except for the song, her message to Dani was clear.

You are not alone.

Lauren hugged her sister once more and swiftly exited the bathroom, but not before whispering, "You are extraordinary."

Dani looked again at herself in the mirror, and this time she saw a whole new person.

She saw a beautiful young woman.

A smart girl.

A strong girl.

A brave girl.

An extraordinary girl.

Dani opened the drawer and pulled out the razor.

She gently tossed it into the trash can.

She wouldn't be needing it anymore.

For she realized that she was extraordinary.

Just like all of you.
