Garuda is an eagle whose parents were Kashyapa Sage and Vinata. His mother was tortured by his stepmother Kadru and snake stepbrothers.They blackmailed him to bring the nectar (Amrita for immortality) to release his motherThrough a lot of hurdles and obstacles, He selflessly brought the Amrit or nectar and later by the plan, grabbed it back from them with help of Indra Deva.Seeing his selfless act, Sri Vishnu asked him to ask any boon. Garuda wished to become Narayana's vahana (vehicle).From that day, Garuda always served Sri Narayana as a selfless devotee.

Who is Adi Shesha?
Sesha was the son of Sage Kashyap and Kadru. Kadru gave birth to 1000 snakes.Sesha was the first son to Kadru.Sesha disliked the way Kadrua and his brothers treated his brother, Garuda, and his mother Vinita.He left them and did great penance for many years.Later, Lord Vishnu appeared before him and asked him a boon.He said, " Lord, I want to always stay with Dharma and never wanted to do evil acts. I want to serve you'Pleased with these words, Lord Vishnu blessed him that he will be his bed.Sesha gladly accepted this and therefore became the bed of Lord Vishnu.Sesha always accompanied Sri Vishnu in most of his incarnations. He became Lakshmana in Rama avatar and became Balarama in Sri Krishna avatar.It is said that Sri Rama blessed Sesha to become a part of Dashavatar. Hence many times we include Balarama as one of the Dashavatar.
