The streets were silent. Not a single soul luming the long, dead roads. Street lamps and stop lights blinking at nothing. Businesses and shops empty. The only thing you see in the sky are drones filled with necessities.  It has been this way for months. People are too scared to leave their homes. It's not like they have a choice to leave anyways. They took that from them a while ago. "Quarantined Precaution" is what they called it. No one else will get it, if no one leaves. No one backlashed. No one rioted. No one cared. Because they were scared. They might be imprisoned, but at least they are safe.
"Beep. Beep.Beep." Here, we find ourselves in a home, just like all the others. Filled with stuff. It is better to be prepared then to have nothing at times like this. As companies start to close, no one knew what would still be available soon. There we see a young girl, locked away in her bedroom. Only sixteen when it started to spread. Life is different now. She was hoping to go to college and leave her family home. Now she watches class on her laptop in the safety of her bed. Thank god for technology, being the only way to truly live now. It doesn't feel like prison when you can still see other people. Even if it's only through a tiny screen.
She met a boy. Over the internet, of course. He too was locked away from the world. So was everyone else. The only way to meet people is through the internet. The days of bars and friends were over. Not like anyone really missed it. Life was different now. People adapted. Dating sites fill with people, all looking for that human connection they were deprived of. Not like they would ever meet in person. It was safer that way.
The young girl opened her laptop and clicked the small icon of the boy's face.  The laptop screen soon filled up with his mug. Face to face they were. They closed they thought they would ever be.
"Hey, how's it going?" he smiled. They have been talking for a while. Getting closer and closer to each other. As close as miles and miles apart can be. This isn't different than in the old times. Long distance relationships were always popular. Now it wasn't a choice.
"I am really good, my VCR headset came in today! It really feels like I am outside again." she stated excitedly.
"You know before the outbreak, I was really worried about robots and stuff like that. Now I don't know what I would do without it." He said sadly.
"I know what you mean. The days of going to coffee shops and hanging out with friends. It seems so long ago. It was so happy back then." She shook her head. "Hey at least we are safe now. At least it can't get to us." People don't like talking about the time before. You can't dwell on the past. You have to move on. Life is different and you have to deal with it.
They chatted for a while.  They talked about everything. Not that means much due to their current situation. But they don't care, it's just nice to be with someone. He began to stare at her. She was beautiful.  He just wishes he was there with her, in his arms. He begins to believe that he would do anything for her. Even go outside.
"I have a secret for you. Will you promise not to tell anyone?" he asked. "Who would I tell?" she giggled.
"I really want to be with you." he states looking straight into her eyes. She giggles again.
"You already are, silly." she doesn't understand he thinks to himself. He wants to be next to her.
"No, I mean I want to walk right out that door and be with you. I want to hold you and hang out with you. Instead of looking at you through this stupid screen. You know, it's probably not as bad as we think it is. I would probably be just fine. You know I would rather go and live then live like this. You know I will do it. " he confesses. Her giggle soon went to a look of pure terror. She began to shake and her eyes went wide. She quickly ended the call. He was insane. He was going to leave. He was crazy. Why would you try to leave? The way they used to talk about it on the news made it seem like once you leave you would die. It's safer to stay still.
She went on with her life. Blocking him on everything. Going back to watching her classes. She was hoping to be a coder. Something everyone was hiring. Life was different than before. But it was starting to feel normal. Because this was life now. No one thought it would change anytime soon. Sure they were all imprisoned, but it was safer. So why would you risk it?
And she was content and safe. This is the way it will always be. But then she heard a sound she hadn't heard since before it all started.
There was a knock on her front door.
