"Mommy?" The small voice echoed through the woods. "Daddy?" A hint of a sob sounded through the desperate call. Leaves rustled and bent as the little girl walked passed, almost as if they tried to show her the way.
The little girl kept walking, a small wooden figurine clutched tightly in her hands, as she searched for her lost parents, her green eyes filled with tears. She heard twigs snap and turned around, slamming her back into one of the trees. A silver-haired man stepped out of the shadows and slowly approached her, his hands held up in surrender.
The girl's breathing picked up as he came closer, and her bottom lip started to tremble.
''Ssh little lass, it's all going to be alright,'' The older man's voice was soothing and the girl felt herself being pulled towards his presence. He crouched down in front of her and reached out one of his hands, waiting for her to come closer.
''What is your name, lassie?'' he asked, his voice soft.
She took a small step closer to the man, but paused, seeming to remember something. ''My parents told me not to talk to strangers,'' she breathed. Tears filled her eyes again and she took a shuddering breath. ''I lost them.''
The man sighed and straightened. ''My apologies, lassie. I should've introduced myself right away.'' he tried to approach her again, and this time she didn't retreat. ''My name is Vesemir, I'm a witcher.''
This caught her interest and she crept closer, curiosity taking over. ''A witcher? You kill monsters?''
This made Vesemir smile and he crouched in front of her again, his old bones popping, making him wince. ''That's indeed what witchers do,'' he chuckled. '' Now that we're not strangers anymore, can you tell me your name?''
The girl averted her green eyes and bit down on her lip. She mumbled something incoherently and Vesemir moved closer. ''What did you say there, lassie?''
She looked up and caught his eyes, looking straight into his soul.
''Avyanna, my name is Avyanna.''
