Dragon Born

Chapter 1

A young girl, looking to be in her early teens, was running full sprint through a dusty silent broken city, dragging a older girl in tow into a small shop, where they both stopped the older one panting for breath.

"Shoki, how the hell do you run so fast, but your not even breaking a sweat."

The older one accused, trying to hide her smile as her friend tossed her black and silver hair shrugging, before throwing a 8 year old twinkie at her friend that she just found on the floor.

"ew, how is that thing not moldy." the oldest girl muttered, pushing her brown hair out of her eyes.

the one named Shoki simply shrugged before grinning and making sign languages that said:

"I dare you to eat it Liana."

Liana, as a response, took the old twinkie out of it's wrapping and threw it into Shoki's face, making her run to the back of the store, mock glaring at her friend.

Liana shrugged. "well lets get to work before we get in trouble and won't let us go out tomorrow."

Shoki grunted before opening a sack and picking up whatever clothes and supplies laid around, these days anything was welcome in the colony.
Once each girl had filled 3 sacks each, they slung them over their shoulders before cautiously looking out of the store, Shoki running ahead to the next building and signaling for Liana, telling her it was safe.

After repeating this a few times, they came to what looked like a sewage entrance in the corner of a building.
Shoki lifted it up, revealing a long tunnel.
Liana slid down first, the raven haired girl waiting a few minutes before throwing her sacks down and jumping down as well, the lid slamming back on.
Shoki couldnt help but grin a little as she sped down the long tunnel, sliding out into a massive cavern, crowded with people, but room around each of the tunnels so people didn't slam into each other.

Liana was already gathering up the bags. "I can take yours if you want Shoki."
She offered gently, picking up Shoki's sacks after she had nodded, then making her way into the oddly quiet crowd, heading toward the drop off.
Shoki decided to go and get a snack, she hadn't eaten since breakfast and it was somewhere around 3.

She headed into the cafeteria, and headed over to the kitchens, usually no one was allowed, but Shoki was a good friend of most of the cooks and maids that worked in there.
Loud hellos greeted her over the roars of the fires and the clang of pots and pans (yes we have fires because its not like we can connect wires deep underground)
she grinned and waved to them, signaling that she was just looking for a snack.
the head chef grinned and gave her some warm rolls that where freshly baked before shooing her back out of the kitchen.

Shoki ran out, skidding to a halt by a empty seat and sat down, eating her food before heading back out to the main cavern to look at the jobs for tomorrow, hoping she was one of the lucky few that got to go out on wednesday, or as a few started calling it dwd= day without dragons.
She walked over to the chart squeezing through the crowd to get a better look.
There where a few triumphent whoops from people who got chosen to go out and some disappointed mutters from those who didn't.
She grinned seeing her name up, along with Liana's, they where even picked to go on the same one!

Her happiness faded a little, seeing that they where having to go on a 3 day trip to the next few cities over.
She felt a hand on her shoulder and looked up to see Liana who had come up to read the chart as well, she squeezed Shoki's shoulder as a gesture of comfort before leaning down and whispering: "hey at least we get to go out and sam and john paul are coming too!"

She nodded feeling a little comforted, watching as Liana walked back off to their rooms, she started following before looking back at a new board that was placed by the entrance to the room sections, it read:

welcome to the room sections, there are 7 total sections, each with a girls side and a boys side.

Section A is the most comfortable and only given to the leaders and the hardest workers.

Section B is second to best, given to the best scavengers.

Section C is good, but much better then others so be thankful!

Section D is the least comfortable.. to say the most, its given to the newbies and lowest workers.

Section E and F are completely off limits, trying to go in could result in banishment or loss of abilites.

She snorted looking at the board, people didn't exactly have a choice whether they wanted to join or not, she muttered in her head before setting off to Section B where she lived.

After entering the girls rooms, she went to her bed on the far back, flopping on it and staring at the high ceiling above her, thinking about the trip tomorrow.
Usually she would be excited about long trips, but she couldn't shake off the feeling of unease at the thought.
She yawned, deciding to get some sleep since it was already somewhere past 9 pm and lights out was at 10.

She grabbed her blanket and threw it over herself, listening to the murmuring of other girls as they got ready for bed as well.
Liana came in from who knows where and curled up on her own mattress before whispering a goodnight to Shoki.
They both drifted off to sleep, Shoki's dreams being filled with shadows whispering unknown words in her ears.
