Chapter 3: Discovery, Part II
I awoke the next day, and found Drew already gone. Garner was sitting next to me in a chair, reading a book.
“Hey.” I said sleepily.
“Hey missy, glad to see you’re awake.”
“You could have told me, you know…”
“Huh? Oh. No, I couldn’t have we’re not allowed. It’s a vow.”
“Whatever. Is Maureen a fairy too?” He nodded. I’ve been told to tell you to go change into loose clothes, and to pick a tee shirt you don’t mind ripping. I’ll show you how.” He helped me up, and I got dressed once he left the room.
I picked a black concert tee my mom used to have. She had given it to me a few years ago. Garner showed me how to rip little slits where my wings would pop out.
“Never,” He said sternly. “Ever, wear this inside the vault. Carry it with you in your bag until we get outside. There are changing shacks we put up for the women to change in once we get out there.”
“Got it. Hey, where’s Drew?”
Garner smiled knowingly. “He woke a while before you did, and he’s already out there learning to fly.”
“I see.”
“Hey Em, did he tell you?”
I hesitated, then nodded.
“And?”
“And I blacked out before I could answer.”
“Ouch. That sucks. Poor Drew.”
“Yeah, I have to find a way to tell him….”
“Listen, I’ll distract the others once you guys learn the basics. They’ll send you on a flight test together. I’ll stall and give you guys some time.” He smiled.
“Did I ever tell you how awesome a big brother you are?”
He grinned. “Nope.”
“Well now you know.” I hugged him and ran out the door, smirking as he tried to catch me. I always was the fastest.
*~*~*
I stood in the door way, waiting for Garner to open the doors. “Ok, shield your eyes at first, then slowly lower them so your eyes can adjust.”
I did as he said. I heard a bang, the doors opening. A bright light lit up the inside of my eye lids, and in winced. I slowly lowered my hand, and opened my eyes. I gasped. The sky was so beautiful!
I jumped out of the door gazing above me, not looking where I was walking. I tripped over something underfoot, and a pair of strong arms caught me. I recognized the celtic tattoo on the wrist right away. Drew.
I smiled up at me, and his responding grin took my breath away.
“Quite a lot to take in, huh?” he said cheerfully.
“Um yeah!” We walked over to the adults, his fingers grazing mine, letting me know he wanted to hold hands.
We got to the adults, who welcomed us. They showed us how to change our wing color, retract and open our wings on command, and finally, how to fly.
At first, I could only hover a few inches off the ground. My wings were like extra muscles, and I had to condition them and learn how to use them properly.
