August had always been a difficult month for 19 year old Sophie Willow. It's the month her father died in a car crash 6 years ago. They were extremely close and it took a long while for Sophie to be even close to back to normal. It's the month she was forced to move to New York and leave all her friends behind. It was also the month she met Shane. Shane was everything Sophie wanted. He was a year older and lived next door so they saw each other constantly. He was a good example of a bad influence. Tall, dark, handsome as hell, and a 16 year old with a fake ID. What more would a 15 year old girl want? From the day they met Sophie went where Shane went. Her nights of studying were spent drinking at parties and trying different things she probably shouldn't at 15. Shane was her everything. Her favorite nights, however, were the nights he'd sneak into her bedroom at the earliest hours of the morning and make her feel more loved than she'd ever felt before. She was so, so happy with Shane.
Their first summer as a couple they spent a good amount of time at Shane's family beach house. It was mostly quiet, just the two of them but of course towards the end of the summer Shane's friends had managed to join their vacation. As did their partying ways. Which brings us to the final reason why August has always been considered difficult for Sophie. The final night of their vacation, Shane and Sophie got to drunk, they weren't thinking and they ended up in a mess no teenagers as young as them should have to go through this early in life.
A good month later, Sophie found out she was pregnant. She'd turned 16 a few days ago and it was the biggest surprise she'd gotten. As any 16 year old would, she freaked out and tried to hide it for as long as she could. The only person she told was her best friend, Emily. She was calm and collected through the whole explanation and told Sophie that she was there for her no matter what. She didn't dare tell Shane yet, he's always been super on top of them having condoms and she knew he'd freak out. He was already freaking out the morning after they woke up and realized what they done. Her mother was okay (she had a near heart attack at first but it's fine) Sophie's her daughter, her only daughter. She loved her with everything in her heart. She wouldn't just toss her out to raise her baby alone. Safe to say when she did work up the courage to tell Shane- because she was showing, not because she wanted to- he freaked out. Just like everyone knew he would. The whole thing ended up turned onto Sophie. It was her fault. Why didn't she grab a condom? Why didn't she take plan B? Which is actually a good question now that Sophie thinks back on it... But the question that ended everything between them is where Sophie drew the line.

Why haven't you gotten rid of it?

Sophie didn't see Shane after that day. She didn't want to. She avoided him at all costs. Yeah it was a huge surprise, one Sophie was nowhere near ready for but 'getting rid of it' never crossed her mind once. She laid down and made the baby, she would love and take care of it like her heart ached to do already.
So fast forward 8 months and Sophie welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world who had Sophie's light hair, pale skin, and crystal blue eyes and nothing of Shane's. That part secretly filled Sophie's soul with joy.
Laela Ocean Willow was the princess of the house. She ruled over both her mother and grandmother. Thankfully she was an easy baby so getting used to the mom life was a lot less difficult than Sophie was anticipating. The waking up at every hour of the night was the hardest to adjust to but it soon became second nature to blindly find her way to the bassinet at the side of the bed and sleepily attend to the crying baby.
Her life changed forever after May 30th. Everyone at school wanted to seem 'supportive' of the 'hopeless, struggling teen mom who couldn't wait'. The only person Sophie knew was really on her side was Emily. The girl was there when Laela came into the world and was the second person to hold her. Junior and Senior year dragged by with tons of school work piled on top of being a new, adjusting mom. Laela made it easier though. She kept herself busy with her toys while Sophie did homework. Unless of course she was hungry.
On the day of her graduation, Sophie walked across the stage and accepted her diploma along side her best friend. Her now two year old daughter was smiling and clapping along with everyone else, sat on her grandmothers lap. Though Sophie is pretty sure the girl has zero idea why they're clapping.
Sophie and Emily has always talked about going to Australia. It's just a dream they've always had and they spent almost their entire high school career saving for a vacation after the left school. But Sophie has Laela and a lot of money had to go towards caring for her daughter. But now, a few weeks after graduation, they have the opportunity to. Emily's parents have family friends who live in Sydney and are offering to let Emily, Sophie, and Laela live there rent free for a year. Of course the girls hopped on the opportunity which brings us to right now.
