"Whew!" I said aloud as I dropped the last box on the floor and wiped a small bead of sweat from my forehead. I stared at the place around me at the labeled boxes that almost completely covered the living room's hardwood floor. I began to drag the boxes into their designated rooms. I may have been tired as fuck, but I was anxious to unpack and finally call this place my home.
As I unpacked the last piece of clothing I owned an orange light glinted on the floor. I ran to the window, letting the tank top fall off its hanger. I propped my elbows up on the windowsill and watched the blazing orange sun lower in the pink sky. The palm trees were nothing but a black outline and it looked as if the whole neighborhood had stopped in sync just to watch the sunset. As the,now red, sun disappeared and the pink sky faded to black, I smiled.
I knew life here would be perfect.
----
My eyes fluttered open and at first I was confused.
Where am I?!
As I blinked a few times my memory came back to me. I'm in LA, living my dream I reminded myself. I hopped out of bed. quickly brushed through my black hair that had purple tips, grabbed my earbuds and phone and walked out my front door.
"My first day in LA...." I breathed as I stepped out into the early morning sunshine. I stuck the earbuds in my ears in my ears and turned on one of my favorite songs, Gold by Owl City. I looked down the sidewalk to make sure no one was coming, than began to dance.
Stand on up and take a bow
There's something there and it's showing
I did a dramatic bow. It was 6:00 in the morning on a Saturday, who would be up to see me at this hour?
There's no need to look around
You're the best we've got going
I did a little skip over a large crack in the sidewalk.
Shout out to the dreams you'll chase
Shout out to the hearts you'll break
I bobbed my head and did a small skip.
Nothing's gonna top you now
I guess you better be going
I began to run down the walk, my hair flying behind me. Finally I hit the chorus and started dancing, I couldn't help it.
'Cause what you got is
Gold, I know, you're gold
Oh, I know, I know
I don't need the stars in the night, I found my treasure
All I need is you by my side so-
I ran face-first into someone and fell. My phone flew out of my pocket, as well as my earbuds from my ears. The phone landed screen first on the concrete and I couldn't find my earbuds that had unplugged themselves from the phone. On my bruised knees I scrambled to my phone, picked it up and turned it over. The sight horrified me. The screen was nothing but cracks and scratches.
"Oh my god, I'm sorry."
I finally looked up at the man I had bumped into. His caramel colored hair was swept to one side of his face and his brown eyes looked concerned. He held his own phone and a cup of Starbucks, which is where I was heading ironically enough. We stared at each other for what was only a moment, but what felt like a century. We both snapped out of it and he looked at my phone screen for the first time.
"Jesus!" He cried, carrying out the "Je". I breathed a heavy sigh.
"Yeah." I said blankly. I thought of all the things I had just lost. All my pictures, ones that dated back to when I was only 19. Then something else hit me even harder. The notes. Every one of my friends and family back home had typed me a note for when I arrived, and now they were gone. I bit my lip to hold back the tears. I knew I didn't have enough money for a new phone. With having to pay a larger rent and the fact that I still didn't have a couch pretty much summed that up. I stood up with my broken phone and turned to him.
"Sorry." I said and gave him a tight smile. I began to walk back home, discouraged, but I felt his hand on my arm. I looked back him with curiosity.
"Hey, I'm sorry. That was my fault I should've been looking, I'll buy you a new phone."
I quickly shook my head. "Oh no, that's okay. Thank you though." I tried to squirm away from his grasp, but he didn't loosen his grip.
"I'm gonna buy you a new one." He said and began to drag me along with him. Well I guess if he's gonna be so persistent, then I might as well joke with him.
"But what about my coffeeeeeee?" I whined. He looked over his shoulder at me and smiled.
"Fineeeeeee!" He said mimicking me. "Coffee then phone." I laughed.
And he did too.
