The city of Lavenport may have been peaceful, but it was where Olivia became a thief. The days were bright and merry for her, but the nights were even merrier for she could easily snatch some greenbacks, sometimes in large quantities. At first, her aim was to earn bread for herself and her old grandmother, who had raised her but was now feeble and unable to work. However, the greed grew and expanded day by day, until Olivia was officially a swindler, a robber, a fact well concealed from her old gran.

"Gran, I'm leaving her work." Olivia waved at her grandmother from the main door of the house, while gran was busy cleaning the curtains.

"Bye Olive! Make sure you eat something at work. You grow paler each day." Gran complained, but Olivia smiled and left, closing the door behind her.

The smile faded and turned into a wicked smirk as she paced away from her little house. Clutching her bagback straps, she darted towards the city centre where many opportunities awaited her and soon, her feet stepped into the wide platform of lucky chances. She carefully trotted to the general store, an easy job for her and her daily sojourn. Her eyes analysed the shelves and the shoppers walking around, and she found an easy catch. She moved towards a middle aged man who was browsing the bakery section, her eyes turning innocent the closer she got. "Excuse me sir, could you please grab that bread on the top shelf for me? I cannot seem to reach it."

The man was a bit surprised but he smiled. "Of course, girl!" He tiptoed and reached his hand for the sealed stack of bread, while Olivia moved behind him, sneakily reached for his back pocket and snuck out his wallet. He was unaware and heedless, as he had not felt his belonging leave his pocket. "Here you go!"

"Thank you sir! Have a great day." She beamed and quickly walked away before tossing the bread in one of the empty baskets and leaving the store. Her next stop was the pub, the one stop she detested. Despite being one of the easiest places to steal from, the pub was home to ill wit and mischief because of the people it was surrounded by. The pub manager could care less about the misconduct of his clients and his employees, and there was constant bickering, brawling, calling of names and insulting. Olivia contemplated upon reaching the entrance of the pub and she stared at the door for a good moment before stepping into it.

She was greeted by stares, as if she shouldn't be there, but that didn't stop her and she went on to sit on one of the barstools. Her eyes began scanning the place until the bartender banged a glass in front of her, startling her and diverting her attention towards him.

"What the hell do you think you're doing here?" He growled under his breath, the rims of his eyes turning red.

"It's a public bar, I came to get myself something to drink." Olivia replied sternly, but she could feel the atmosphere changing.

He chuckled sarcastically and scoffed "I am well aware of what you did yesterday. And the day before yesterday. And the days before that. Just because I don't warn you, doesn't mean you're welcome here. Leave, before I call the cops."

"But what have I done, good sir?" She exclaimed with a playful smirk which was enough to annoy the bartender even more.

"You petty mugger, out!" He shouted and Olivia sighed as she strolled out of the bar. "How wonderful." She said to herself upon exiting and aimlessly walked about the streets. This was until she came across an old alleyway, a haunting one which was filthy and covered with cobwebs. It reeked of rotten banana peels and egg shells, and it would not have caught her attention if she hadn't heard the strange sounds originating from it. The whimpers came from deep down within the narrow pathway, and for a moment she decided to ignore it, thinking it was some animal making the sounds. But what if it was an injured person? Someone who couldn't fight back even if she did decide to mug them? This thought was enough to pull Olivia into the dirty street. The closer she got, the louder the sounds became and it was indeed someone crying in pain.

She reached the end of the alleyway and it was the moment of truth that was concealed by the two trashcans blocking the view. She moved one and her eyes landed upon a fit figure lying down on the floor, his arms tightly wrapped around his abdomen. Her body paused and took a moment to study the man, but once she found a large spot of blood on his abdomen, she squealed and moved to pick the man up.

"You're injured! How did this happen?" Her voice quivered.

"Get me-" he uttered almost inaudibly "-to the hospital."

Olivia pulled him up and put his arm around her shoulder for support, dragging his body out of the alleyway and into the streets. Once she reached the clear street, she approached a young lady, who was in shock upon seeing Olivia and the state of the bloodied man.

"Please, call an ambulance." Olivia panted and the woman wasted no time in doing so. The ambulance arrived almost immediately and Olivia helped transfer the man into the vehicle.

"I'll be off." She said to the paramedic but he held her arm and pushed her into the vehicle. "You need to be with this man, miss. It may be necessary for the police investigation."

"Hold on, a police investigation? What did I do? I just saved the man!" Olivia was infuriated.

"Please calm down, we need to examine the patient." The vehicle started moving before Olivia could escape. She was trapped with strangers; two paramedics and a man who was unconscious, which made her wish she hadn't saved him. "It's a gunshot, on his lower abdomen." One of the medics stated, bringing light on the seriousness of the situation, which had an immediate effect on Olivia. Her jaw dropped and her widened eyes scanned the gunshot closely. It looked quite deep and she realised how painful it must have been for the man. And if he did die, she would be the one in trouble because she found him.

"Please good sir, you've got to survive." She uttered these words with a shaky voice.

The journey lasted soon and the paramedics moved the stretcher out of the vehicle. They rushed it into the hospital and Olivia was made to follow, and before she knew it, she was waiting outside the ICU, for a man she didn't even know.
