The S.H.I.E.L.D. research department was filmed at NASA's Plum Brook Station. It is a space environment simulation center used to test rocket engines and space stations.
Joss Whedon also said the monitors on the bridge of the Helicarrier were arranged in a way to resemble the wings of the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo.
