...............
(Hermione's POV)
Hermione was walking down the corridor when she heard it. "Oi, Granger, not to scare you, but I think you have something in your hair!" She turned around to see Malfoy leering at her, a sneer on his face.

She flushed with anger, and her hand jerked towards her wand, concealed in her robes. She was about to say something, when a familiar voice interrupted, stopping her from retorting.

"Hey Malfoy, how's your dad? Any new gossip from Azkaban?" She turned and saw Ron and Harry approaching from the Charms classroom. Malfoy turned bright red in anger. She knew that this would end in a duel or a detention. It always seemed to. She suspected Ron had fired the insult, his face was already red.

"Weasly. Potter." Malfoy seemed to be trying to control his anger, and he was failing. Hermione hissed at the boys. "Stop, it's not worth it." Ron stared at her in confusion, and he slowly lowered his wand. She hadn't even realized he had gotten it out. "Fine, Hermione, but next time the slimy git insults you I'm going to jinx him into next week." Ron spat.

Harry watched the exchange quietly. He reluctantly put his wand back in his pocket. The three of them gave an identical glare at Malfoy, and walked towards the common room. "Ron," Hermione started, "do you mind helping me find a book in the library tomorrow night? I believe Harry is going to meet Ginny tomorrow."

Ron turned to look at Harry. "You didn't tell me you were going on a date with my sister!" Harry and Hermione glanced at each other, a hint of laughter in their eyes. "Ron, you already knew that I was dating Ginny!" He said with a sigh. "Well... just don't go snogging her like Dean." Ron said, and with that he skipped the last step to the common room.

Hermione looked at the Fat Lady, snoring away with a glass of deep purple liquid. The liquid was spilling onto her white dress, and as the stain became larger, the Fat Lady's snores grew louder. "Ahem." Hermione cleared her throat to get her attention. "Ahem!" The Fat Lady still wasn't responsive. "AHEM!" The Fat Lady jerked awake, the last of her drink spilling all over herself. "I was asleep, why did you bother me!" Harry snorted loudly, and then quickly quieted under Hermione's glare. "We, er, need to get into the common room?" Ron said with a somewhat uncertainty in his voice.

"Well..." The Fat Lady didn't seem to have a retort for that. "Diligrout." Hermione said firmly. The portrait swung forward and revealed a large hole. The trio walked through and into the Gryffindor common room.
................
Hermione was finishing her Herbology essay, when a paper airplane crashed into her forehead. "Ow!" She swiveled to see Ron standing behind her, wand aloft, face bright red. "RONALD!" She shrieked. She pulled her wand from her pocket and pointed it at his chest. "He-hermione please don't!" She looked at him, and could tell that he truly was sorry. She didn't completely understand why, but she lowered her wand. "Thank you Hermione! I'll make it up to you, promise!" He said.

For some reason, she couldn't bring herself to respond. She could feel her cheeks heating up when he flashed a sheepish smile. After what seemed like forever, she said, "I expect you to."

Hermione went back to her essay, and checked it thoroughly. She carefully placed the essay in her bag, and decided to take a break from homework. She pulled out her book, and started reading.

She stayed like that for hours. She didn't even notice when a certain redhead tiptoed down the stairs. She didn't see him sit in the armchair next to her. And she definitely didn't see the way he was looking at her; like she was his entire world.
...............
(Ron's POV)
Ron pulled on his pajamas as he chatted with Harry and Neville. "Anyway Neville, I reckon Snape gives Harry detention tomorrow for breathing." Ron said. Neville grinned. "I bet two sickles." Harry rolled his eyes and told them to shut up. "Alright mate, but we both know he always finds a way to give you a detention." After several minutes of imitating Snape's expressions whenever he saw Harry, the boys slowly started to change the subject.

Harry and Neville started talking about Ginny and Neville's new girlfriend, Hannah Abbott. She was his first girlfriend, and he seemed really happy to be with her. Ron awkwardly nodded along with their conversation. Truth be told, he never felt anything towards Lavender when they were dating. At least, not after the first five minutes. He just couldn't bear to make her cry or yell.

He started to drift off when he remembered that he had left his book bag downstairs. Harry and Neville were still chatting, and it didn't seem like they would stop. He wondered if he would be able to go retrieve his stuff before anyone noticed. He silently pushed back his bed covers and left the dormitory.

Ron tiptoed down the stairs, hoping that he could find his bag. He wondered if it was to late to start his Herbology essay, it didn't seem like Harry and Neville would be done for awhile. And he really didn't want to hear about how much Harry enjoyed dating his sister.

As he crept towards the common room, he noticed a single girl still sitting on one of the couches.

He was about to tap her on the shoulder when he realized who it was. Hermione sighed happily at what he suspected to be a particularly good part of her book. He would never understand why she voluntarily read. All books were rubbish in his opinion. Except for Quidditch Through The Ages. That book he could read for hours. Now that he had broken up with Lavender, he could focus on Quidditch more.

He sat down in an armchair next to Hermione and watched her read, knowing that she wouldn't notice him for a while.

As her eyes moved back in forth over the page, he watched her slowly smile, and then stared at her eyes. They could be stormy with a hint of sadness, or they could be dancing in pure joy. He was awed by how beautiful she looked. Her hair was down and encircled her head like a large halo. She was wearing an old sweater and a pair of shorts. She was perfect. He wondered if she would ever look at him like she looked down at the pages.

Bloody hell. Since when did I let those thoughts back into my head! Ron, get it through your thick skull: she is your best friend. Think about food! He chuckled lightly at the thoughts running through his head. Hermione's head snapped up. "Oh uh, blimey Hermione, I didn't mean to distract you." She frowned, then lifted the corner of her mouth. "It's alright, it was just such a good part."

He stared at her for a moment, her eyes staring into space with wonder. He glanced at the clock above the fireplace. "Bloody hell, it's nearly midnight!" He exclaimed. "Is it? Well, off to bed Ronald, you need sleep, we have potions tomorrow!" He stared at her, wondering how she could possibly be focused on school at the moment. "Er, right."

"Well go on Ron!" He flashed her his puppy dog eyes. "But Hermione!" She smiles at his attempt. "You can stay down for a few more minutes, as long as you work on your essay!" She said. "Never mind," he sighed, "I'd rather go to bed. Night 'Mione." She blushed a deep scarlett. He wondered why, then felt his face heat up. No one ever called her 'Mione. "I'm sorry, I just thought it sounded cute, and-." He was cut off when she placed her hand on his. "It's fine, Ron. I- I don't mind so much when you call me 'Mione. His eyes lit up, and he smiled. "Goodnight. 'Mione."

He turned around and smiled at the back of her head. Then he solemnly trudged up the stairs, mumbling as he went.

Hermione turned and watched his shadow disappear along with him. She turned back to her book. "Goodnight, Ron."
