Chapter 1 // First Impressions

Jess walked through the front door of her new house dragging her suitcase behind her and heading straight to her room with tears welling in her eyes. This is not how she expected her summer to begin.

Jessica's s father was Ronan Palms, CEO and founder of Palms Tech, one of, if not the largest tech companies in the world. They manufactured everything to say the least, from weapons to construction to vehicles to phones, the list was endless. She never understood how he could have created such a huge empire across so many industries, but she was proud.

Sadly, there came one disadvantage to being the daughter of Ronan Palms. He was super protective so the house they lived in had so many layers of security, making it difficult when she needed to go in and out of the house. The property was also massive, not that she was complaining, and it allowed for maximum privacy.

The main reason Ronan had the security measures was to protect his daughter. He was very paranoid and always worried that somebody would kidnap or hurt her for ransom so, when she was born, they didn't tell anyone. Especially not the media.

Jessica was home schooled by her mum until she left her and her father for some actor when she was four. She couldn't care less though - she barely remembered the woman. Uncle Tony, one of the few people that did know about her, took over that role and kept it for the most part of her childhood until she finally convinced her dad to let her go to boarding school. There the holidays worked differently so she got home for the summer weeks before the public schools so she got to go home early, but after her first week back at home, the unimaginable happened.

She was having dinner with her father after her uncle had already gone to sleep when a bang disrupted the silence. The glass in the huge windows shattered, destroyed by a single bullet which also claimed the life of her father as it passed straight through the side of his head.

At that point, Tony decided the best thing to do would be to leave. The likelihood was that if the assassin had the information needed to get into the position to take that shot, they probably also knew that Ronan had a daughter.

So, they bought a small place in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in a small run down area to keep their cover and leave their lives behind forever.

A/N

So... this is the first story I've decided to just go ahead and publish without finishing first. I have a lot of time on my hands now so updates should be super regular.

Don't worry - this was only a filler chapter of sorts to get to know the character better. I hope you enjoy it and I'm always welcome to any constructive criticism or feedback or whatever so just let me know.

Also, what do you guys think about the name Jessica (or Jess for short) for the main character?

Btw, I chose Lily Collins for the part of Jessica Palms which is why she is featured on the cover.
