As I sat on the pavements of the busy streets of Badagry, I cradled my three months old baby and sighed all the while looking at the activities of the passerby's on the road. I remember when I used to be cruising round in my parents Ferrari with them and laughing at the people who were once in the position I am in now.
I used to be popular, everybody knew me, my parents and I appeared in the tabloids every single week, I used to be all everybody ever knew, the minute I stepped down from the car the paparazzi followed, they swarmed our mansion day and night, my parents even had to get bodyguards, I attended every function, wedding, celebration, any social event named, wherever I went my name was heard, Alya, Alya, Alya, Alya.......
The sound of my baby's crying brought me out of my reverie. Immediately after attending to her needs and putting her back to sleep, I slipped into my world of thought once again. I sighed, where did it all go wrong.........
My name is Alya Thompson. I was born into the family of Mr. and Mrs Jacob Thompson as the only child. My father is the owner of one of the many oil companies and my mother had always been a housewife for as long as I had known her. I was never pampered as my father was a disciplinarian and didn't belief in luxury yet for the sake of my mother who was also forced by my father to become a housewife, he decided to allow her all the good things of life and so we lived in a mansion, with a pool, a fridge that was always stocked, a garage full of cars of all the latest models, wardrobes filled with the latest clothing, all the latest shoes....... In fact, there was nothing more we could ask for. I could proudly tell anyone anywhere I HAD EVERYTHING!!!!!!
I attended Loyola Jesuit in Abuja where we resided. I was a star in the sense that I had wealthy parents who were philanthropists and so were known worldwide, I was always the top of my class, I was every teachers favorite student and every parents favorite child, I was loved by everyone and I loved everyone, I was always on good terms with everyone and my parents never had any reason to wish for another child or lament over the one they had presently and above all my family was from the lineage of one of the most devoted Christian families and so my parents raised me in the way of the lord which I've been living in and so in other words 'I LIVED A PERFECT LIFE". I never wished for anything more and I felt like the luckiest girl in the world but the arrival of a certain person turned my whole life upside down.
A car sped by and in the process splashed water on me. I quickly covered my baby and cleaned my face. I couldn't blame him because my motto was once ' if u have money why not make good use of it' and I guessed that was what he was doing so I didn't take notice. Anyway back to my story...
Mariah Jones was my next door neighbor who happened to attend the same school I did. She was a devoted child of God, had wealthy and God loving parents and was an all round good girl or so I thought. We became best friends and were closer than peas in a pod. We went everywhere together and even attended the same social events. Life was still going good until that day.......
'Alya, you have got to see this' Mariah said jumping up and down all the while pulling my arm. I looked up from the novel I was reading and grunted lazily as she dragged me through the corridors of the hall. 'I swear Mariah if it's a stupid reason you made me leave my book ill personally rip....'. I looked up to see a limousine with a bodyguard opening one of the doors. Out stepped the most gorgeous boy I had ever seen. I was swooning but I decided to be the bigger one out of both of us and not let it show. 'Is this the reason why you disturbed my reading?' I said to Mariah in a stern voice. 'Come on Alya you know you like him' she said winking in my direction. 'I think there is something wrong with your eye' I said before walking away. Still looking at Mariah I bumped into a person. I had begun to apologize when I saw the face of the person. It was Loyola Jesuits new heartthrob. I smiled and picked his books which had fallen in the process, it was then I noticed Mariah. Even before I could introduce myself she walked straight up and took his hand' hi my name is Mariah and this is my best friend Alya. 'As I watched her in amazement I smiled to myself and thought 'She would stop at nothing to get what she wanted'. I felt a tap on my arm and looked up to see Luke [the new boy] smiling down at me. I mumbled a quick I'm sorry and walked away. Since that day, the three of us became really good friends but Mariah's bad side never showed until Luke and I became closer than ever even more than Mariah and I ever were. She began to get jealous and would stop at nothing to separate us at any given opportunity she had. Luke on the other hand never felt anything was different so he continued acting the same way he always acted which apparently annoyed Mariah. One day as I was passing by Mariah's locker I heard her mutter to herself 'if she wants him so bad then she will get him'. I felt it was odd for her to say that but in order to avoid dispute of any kind I decided to let it go.
Mariah was holding her 18th year old birthday party at her house just the week after and invited both Luke and I to be her VIPs or so she called it. She said that since it was her party and we were her guests she was going to serve us. She first offered us drinks but I declined suspecting fully that she must have spiked it. To be on the safer side I decided to serve myself instead and I walked up to the table and poured Luke and I a drink but what I didn't ever realize was that Mariah would stoop so low. Feeling really thirsty, I doused the drink in one gulp. It felt kind of funny but I didn't mind as long as I had quenched my thirst. The remaining events happened in quite a blur and before long I blacked out.
I woke up to the sound of a sing song voice which was worsening my pounding headache. I grunted and pulled the sheets over my head. Wait what? Why was I in sheets? I jumped out of the bed and saw Luke sleeping on the other side and Mariah standing with a mocking smile at the edge of the bed. What was she smirking about? Oh well.... I was about to leave the room when she said 'You might want to put some clothes on' I looked up at myself and gasped. I moved closer to Luke and gave him a hard slap. 'What did u do to me?. He fell from the bed and got up quickly before stuttering 'I...I...I.. swear I wasn't myself , I never would have done that to you on purpose, we were both drunk and we.... You know....'. I slapped him again and I had forgotten that Mariah was there until we heard a mocking laugh. She looked at both of us and laughed a long time before saying 'this is what u get for abandoning me'.She was about to walk out but I grabbed her cloth and said calmly in her face 'how could you do this to me?'. All of a sudden with the energy gotten from my boiling rage I slapped her twice before screaming ' I will continue to hate you for as long as I live Mariah Jones'.
I ran back to my house and ever since I was never the same. Things grew from bad to worse when I realized I might be pregnant and decided to take a pregnancy test. My world came crumbling down when the test came back positive and I had to face my parents. Being the wonderful parents they were I knew deep down I had disappointed them bad. Even though they tried not to show it I could still see the hurt in my mothers eyes each time she came to pray for me. I could take it no more and so I decided to do what I thought was best.
I ran away.
I gave birth to my child before I left but carried him with me and I ended up here. I heard nothing from anybody since then and I keep hoping I'll be able to correct my future before it's too late. This is my story.
