"Jennie-unnie? What are you doing?"
Jennie turned her head just in time to see Lisa shuffling into the kitchen. It was late into the night, but the lack of Lisa's infamous bedhead told her that younger girl must have been staying up late playing with her cats again.
"I'm heating up some milk, Lis," the brunette replied. As if on cue, the microwave tinged, prompting the brunette to return her attention to it. She carefully retrieved the mug inside before turning to the blonde who was now sitting at the counter closest to her. "You want some?" she offered.
"Nope, I'm good." Lisa's answer was followed by a big yawn. "Why warm milk, though? You can't sleep?"
Jennie hummed in response as she took a small sip, the warm liquid soothing her throat and easing her mind. The brunette drank some more before noticing Lisa's gaze fixing on her. The younger girl's expression was so endearing that Jennie swore she could feel cheeks warming up.
Of course the mighty Jennie Kim couldn't afford that, so she gave a light cough and called the dazzled girl out. "Lisa? You're staring."
"A-Am I?" the younger girl stuttered out of her trance, seemingly oblivious to her action.
"Are you sure you don't want some milk?" Jennie teased, glad that she managed to turn the table.
"Um, not that I want the milk, unnie," said Lisa while resting her chin on her hands. "You just looked so cute drinking from that mug I had to stare at you, I guess."
And Jennie officially lost her cool, almost spitting out her drink on the spot. Well, almost, because she had an image to uphold. The brunette took a breath to calm herself, placed her mug safely on the counter and threw an un-amused look at the culprit of her tiny heart attack. "Seriously, Lis? Flirting with me in your pajamas in the middle of the night?"
"I'm serious," defended Lisa. "Did your heart skip a beat, though?" the blonde teasingly lifted her eyebrows at her favorite unnie.
"Aish, I can't even with you." Jennie shook her head, returning to her mug to avoid further embarrassment.
After a few sips, the brunette looked over the mug's rim and at her bandmate again, noticing that the latter might just lull herself into dreamland soon judging from her slumped posture. "Go to bed, Lisa," Jennie urged. "It's late now and we have schedules tomorrow."
"But Jen, I kinda wanna be with you now." Lisa whined as she draped herself all over the counter, her eyes dropping despite her persistence.
Jennie held back a chuckle at the sight. She poked at Lisa's soft cheek, making the younger girl frown in fake annoyance. The brunette teased fondly, "You said that but I'm sure you'll be out like a light within seconds."
"But I don't wanna leave you alone in this dark and scary kitchen!" said Lisa flapping her long arms around as if to emphasize her point. Jennie couldn't stop her giggles this time, and Lisa swore it was the most beautiful sound ever. She turned her head to meet Jennie's eyes, beaming brightly. "See? I can make you happy! I'm a good companion!"
Jennie couldn't disagree. Lisa could be a bit troublesome with her excessive energy sometimes, but the Thai was surprisingly a good listener when needed. Jennie recalled the times when Lisa lent her shoulder for the brunette to rest on – both literally and figuratively.
The brunette let out a contented sigh, but decided to tease her bandmate some more. "Yes, but you could be a headache sometimes."
"Wha-? What did I ever do to annoy you?" Lisa eyes went comically wide, as if they hadn't been big enough normally.
"I can easily recount your pranks on Jisoo-unnie and Rosie, you know. You wouldn't even spare our staffs or literally anyone that befriends you."
"But those pranks were harmless, Jen!"
"To you, it may seem so but some of your jokes went a bit too far, Lisa. Remember that time when Rosie had to push you with full force? When Jisoo-unnie had to lock Dalgom away from you? Or when I got so mad at you and your mischief that I didn't talk to you for days?"
Lisa deflated at that. Okay, maybe I go overboard a teeny tiny bit sometimes, but I can't help it when my favorite playmates are near me!
"But you guys are so fun to be with!" the blonde weakly tried to justify her actions. "Chaeyoungie is an adorable mess when I tease her. Jisoo-unnie is the only one that can go roughhousing on me without messing up. As for you, Jen, I like it whenever you're around."
Jennie found her heart skipping several beats as Lisa's doe eyes bore deeply into hers with unwavering affection. For a split second, the brunette believed that the Thai could actually escape charges of murder with that look. Jennie racked her brain to find something that could retaliate, something that could stop Lisa from making her blush like a fool, something like-
"You're really cheesy, you know." Really, Jennie?
"I know," beamed Lisa with unabashed pride, though her gaze was fixed onto the counter. She ran her forefinger along the smooth surface, tracing random patterns as she spoke. "You hate it when I do cringy stuff but you scrunch your face in the cutest way possible so I just keep messing up with you. And your duality fascinates me."
The blonde took her unnie's silence as a sign to continue, so words effortlessly escaped her mouth. "I mean, like, yesterday you rocked the stage, literally, and the next day you're pampering Kuma and Kai with the softest look on your face. You're savage, mighty and all, but you're also very caring and sensitive. And really funny, too. And we click just by looking at each other, like you said. Why would I ever not want to be around someone like you?"
Jennie knew Lisa never considered herself good with words, but in rare moments when the younger girl was comfortable enough to voice her feelings, her words touched the deepest part of the heart of her listener. Just like right now, Lisa's adoration came out tenfold, so sincere, warm and inspiring it made Jennie's heart swell with happiness.
Putting the empty mug down with a clink that successfully drew the younger girl's attention back to her, Jennie fondly spoke, "That's really sweet of you, Lisa. Thank you. And I like having you around, too."
"Really? Even though I'm annoying sometimes?"
"Well, you're not annoying. Your jokes are, sometimes. But most of the time, you're cool. You're like an endless source of positive energy to us. To me. It's refreshing, especially when we are swamped with work. I know I don't say it often, but I really appreciate your effort, Lis."
"Aw~ I'm feeling so flattered right now. But still, unnie, sorry if I ever make you uncomfortable with my antics."
"It's okay. I know you don't mean it. But pay more attention when you play with us. Not everyone has the same energy level as you. Well, maybe Rosie does, seeing that she could push you off the bed that one time. Anyway, just control your strength, got it?"
"Yes, ma'am!" Lisa saluted jokingly before letting out a soft sigh. "I love it when we talk like this. You even called me cool. How many people get to hear that from the Jennie Kim, huh? I won't forget this conversation. Ever."
"Don't worry. I won't forget your cheesy confession, either."
"... Somehow it feels a bit like a threat when you say that, Jen."
"Well, because it is. Don't think I will let you live it down."
"Unnieeeeeeeeee!"
Jennie chuckled at the girl whining in front of her. She quickly washed the mug and put it away before poking at the pouting blonde. "Come on, let's get back to bed."
"Will you carry me? Pretty please?"
"In your dreams, Manofoot."
Lisa giggled, giving Jennie a side-hug as the shorter girl walked by to get to her room. "Goodnight, Nini."
"Goodnight, Lili."
