"Found you!" Riley screamed as she tagged me in my hiding spot. We were playing hide and seek, for which I have decided to hide in a tiny, damp closet.
I uncovered the heap of clothes from my body and breathed a sigh of relief as I quickly cooled down. It felt like a heater underneath all of those clothes.
The closet was narrow and had a light switch, but the bulb was burnt out so it was pitch black until Riley had pulled the door open. It was filled with all sorts of clothes that you would see people wearing in the '80's.
"Arg! Again?!" I protested teasingly.
Hide and seek was Riley's favorite game and she would always end up winning.
"You just need to practice and step up your game Kay!" She said with that sly, gapped tooth smile plastered on her face. I smiled back with glee.
"Girls! Suppers done!" Riley's mother called from the kitchen. We were both at the table in an instant while Mrs. Comeaux finished preparing our meals.
My full name is Kaylee, but Riley started to call me Kay and it just stuck. Mrs. Comeaux's cooking was always wonderful in my opinion. When Mrs. Comeaux serves us our plates of meat, Olivia arrives in the kitchen and sits down patiently.
Olivia was Riley's older sister, but I wish that she was my sister. Olivia has long blond hair growing lighter towards the tips, and sparkling green eyes that you could get lost in, if your not careful.
I smile at Olivia and she smiles back, light bouncing off of her shiny metal braces. I look down at my plate in delight, as we were having hotdogs and hamburgers this evening.
I told Mrs. Comeaux to give me the biggest hamburger with a whole jumble of pickles. When I bit into it, the cheese melted in my mouth and it felt heavenly. Especially after running all over the house nonstop. I just began to realize how hungry I was.
I gazed at the empty chair seated right in front of me where Riley's dad was supposed to sit. Riley's father didn't make it for dinner because he was called in to work late on the oil rig. When I took the second bite of my burger, it reminded me of my dad.
My dad always used to barbecue hamburgers, hotdogs, ribs, any meat he could get his hands on. I can practically smell the barbecue sauce as my dad lifted me on top of his sturdy shoulders to examine the meats. I began to feel tears well up in my eyes in reality. I hold them back as I try to switch the channel in my mind.
"This is delicious Mrs. Comeaux!" I say.
"Well thanks Kaylee, I'm so glad you were able to come over because Riley has been so bored these past few days."
"No problem, I can come over anytime."
After that statement left my mouth, it was silent. Deafening silence, the kind that made your ears ring and bleed. It was making everyone uncomfortable so I raced to finish off my hamburger. Luckily I didn't have much on my plate.
