Awsten woke up at 7am on Monday morning. He sighed, exhausted from the mere 4 hours of sleep he got. His radio was quiet, as Awsten would turn the volume down at night, so he went and turned the knob to hear My Chemical Romance playing. He got dressed and ran downstairs to make some toast before school. Gracie, his sister, was sitting at the table."Hey loser," she says playfully."Good morning to you too brat," Awsten replies. He made toast with jelly and sat down for a few minutes to eat while Gracie scrolled through her phone. Their mom always worked in the mornings, so she wasn't there to make the two breakfast. Once he finished the toast, he started to walk towards the door."If you're not in the car in five minutes, I'm taking off," Awsten says to Gracie. He never actually does leave without her, though, even though school was just a fifteen minute walk away. Within three minutes, Gracie hopped into the car and Awsten drove the two to school. Gracie was a sophomore and Awsten was a senior, so once they opened the school doors, the two went down two different hallways. Awsten walked to his first hour History a little early, because his friends were already there.Awsten walked into class and saw his best friends in their desks talking before the hour started. He ran a hand through his plum-purple hair and went to his desk to join the conversation. Otto and Alex were in a debate about the school donuts, if the chocolate or maple were better."Like, the chocolate sucks," Otto said, "It's always gross and runny and it's just messy. Also, the flavor is like bakers chocolate, it's so bitter." he took his donuts very seriously."You're entirely wrong." Alex replied, "The chocolate is that good kind of runny. The maple kind is literally just hard frosting, and it doesn't even taste like anything."Awsten rolled his eyes, "Not to fuel the fire, but plain white frosting is way way way better than both of those donuts."The others in the group listened, but didn't pitch in. Awsten kept giggling about how dumb this argument was.The period went by smoothly, since there was a substitute teacher, who just said they could all have a work day. That basically just meant "talk to your friends and go on your phones" hour. The group continued the donut debate while Awsten daydreamed like always. What did Awsten like to daydream about? Boys. Not just any boys, though. One particular boy.His name was Geoff Wigington. He had chestnut hair and the bluest eyes Awsten had ever seen, as cliche as it was, they looked like two oceans. This boy was tan, toned, and extremely strong. He was on the football AND basketball team, for God's sake. But Awsten couldn't have this boy. Geoff was straight, obviously. Like, he was on the football team, how much straighter could you get.Awsten had hope, though. I mean, this boy hasn't had a girlfriend since the seventh grade, even though every girl wanted him. Awsten always hoped it was because Geoff wasn't straight, and maybe even liked him too.His friends knew, it was obvious. Awsten was practically drooling every time he walked into a class they had together. But, also, Awsten did talk about him 24/7 to his group.Other kids beside the group probably knew, too. Awsten just prayed Geoff didn't catch on, because Awsten was sure he'd be dead if this extremely straight boy found out that the gay kid had a crush on him. That's sort of how the school knew Awsten. He didn't have a ton of friends, just his group with Otto, Alex, Patty, and Dallon. Awsten was known as the gay kid with the purple hair, because in their small California town, there was barely any gay kids and no one else had dyed hair except for Alex, with his neon green locks. Otto's girlfriend Grace dyed her hair occasionally, too, but most of the time it was very light or pastel. Their group of friends was a weird variety, but consisted of everybody who wasn't super popular or cool, like your normal cliche outcast squad. The next hour was Anatomy, which Awsten absolutely dreaded. He hated seeing guts and blood, but he needed one more science credit to graduate, and it was his only option. He walked into class and was greeted with a table of lab coats. Great, they were gonna be dissecting today. Awsten sat down alone. None of his friends happened to be in this class, because they all took it Junior year. The anatomy teacher explained that the class would be dissecting baby pigs, and they all needed a partner. Awsten immediately got anxious, because none of his friends were in the class. But of course, the stars alligned or something stupid, and he was chosen to be with Geoff. Fuck. He went to Geoff's lab table and sat down."Hey," Geoff said softly."Hey, Geoff," Awsten replied, almost shaking. the way he got around Geoff was insane. his body tensed up, he could barely talk, his brain just shuts down. The teacher handed the two a baby pig on a tin. Awsten almost gagged. This class was gonna suck today.Soon enough, it was lunchtime. Awsten made it through that hour being extremely awkward and grossed out at the same time, and then he went to his English class where he just read an old book by himself.Awsten got to the lunch table, and was greeted with his friends yet again."Do you guys hear that our basketball team is going to reigonals?" Alex said to the group. it was a surprise to all, because, frankly, their team sucked."Wait, really?" Dallon asked, very shocked."Yeah, they did so good at the game on Friday, I was honestly expecting it." Otto added.Awsten wouldn't know, because he absolutely hated school events. Otto was the one kid in the group who was actually social. They all finished their school provided chicken nuggets, and went to the bleachers in the second gym to sit down. Awsten always watched Geoff here, creepy as it was, he played basketball after he was done with his lunch, and Awsten absolutely loved to see him do it. He knew it was creepy, but he just couldn't help himself. When school was over, Awsten waited in his red hand-me-down car for Gracie. She hopped in about five minutes after Awsten got there, and they drove home after getting snacks at the convenience store. They were greeted with their mom at the door. She hugged them both and asked how their day was."It was eh," Gracie began, "I'm just ready for summer break. School's fun I guess, but I'm sick of my annoying teachers."Awsten giggled, "I'm so glad I don't have to deal with the 9th and 10th grade science teacher anymore, god I hated her."Their mom smiled, "Well, in only three months you two will be done. Gracie's got summer break," she looked at Awsten, "and you've got the rest of your life!"Awsten tensed. He didn't wanna face the real world. He didn't wanna graduate.
