Jake Wilder and his Unknown Inheritance

Chapter 1

"We are going to our cabin, it is a place only me and Alan know about. He can work in peace there and I can train sometimes. We usually take turns in coming here." After a pause June spoke again: "I will not make you go and see a doctor that is what I said in front of your teacher. I think I know what is causing your blackouts. I wanted to explain everything sooner, but when you said you don't want to know anything about your real parents, Alan told me to take it as a sign and wait. So we waited and it turned into years. We fooled ourselves believing that we still have time. There is no more time, as your life might be in danger from these blackouts you've been having." Jake listened to every word June said, but did not dare move his head. Maybe she was a little crazy now. What did his real parents have to do with his problem? He couldn't wait to see Alan so he could tell him it was all nonsense and June was having some kind of crisis. June looked at Jake, but seeing he refused to look at her, she continued with her story.

"I knew your mother and father, we were friends since the Academy. That was the school we went to, you were admitted when you turned 6 years old. Your father's name was Jake as well and he was a warrior, brave and kind hearted. He fell in love with your mother when they were a little bit older then you are. It was like one day he saw her with different eyes. No one saw it coming. Your mom's name was Hayley and she was so shy and clumsy, but very smart. The 4 of us remained friends even after we graduated from Academy. You see, you graduate at 16 and because your father was coming from an important family in the community he had to marry a girl your grandparents chose. He would not hear of it, they tried to persuade him, they even tried to kidnap your mother and take her away" June said smiling. "Of course that didn't work out. You are like your father that way, when you set your mind to something, there is no one that can make you do otherwise. Don't get me wrong, Hayley wasn't poor or anything like that, but she was let's say, middle class, while your father was supposed to be the next ruler of our community. All of this took like a year, but soon the families got together and arranged Jake and Hayley's wedding. It is very common to get married at 17 or 18 years old in our community because we fall in love only once, so there is really no point in waiting."

"I remember their wedding day, it was incredible, we were invited as well, me and Alan. Of course at that time I had no idea of my feelings for him. Later Alan told me that he waited 3 years for me to see him the way he saw me. Anyway that is another story for another time."

"Now with your parents married everything was different. Your mom had to learn all these fancy things, like how to eat and drink. It was a headache, but then something wonderful happened and your mom got pregnant with you. When I saw the happiness on their faces and how well your parents would be together, how they would know just by looking at each other what the other wants. They even completed each other's sentences sometimes. Then I realized I want something like that as well and I saw Alan differently. We soon got married because we had no opposition like Jake and Hayley and moved in together."

"If your mother gave birth to a girl, your father wasn't going to inherit the role from his father. That is how it goes in the community. If you were born a girl, then all the family branch would become second and your grandfather's brother would inherit the role of leader. I don't think you understand and it is very important, so I will tell you about your siblings. Your grandfather had a younger brother, the only difference between them was that your grandfather was born first, so he became the main branch of the family, the next leader. Your grandfather's brother became the second branch, still more important then the rest of us, but not as important as your grandfather. Your grandfather's seat as a ruler was definite when he had your father. His brother also has a son, a few years younger than your father. So if your mother gave birth to a girl, they family would become second and your father's cousin would rise to power. You are also forbidden to know the gender of the baby until the birth. So 9 months your mother was very stressed despite your father's reassurements, that all would be fine."
