Jake approached looking at his mother. He could not read her expression. He was afraid she was disappointed. When he sat down his mother finally looked at him. June had hazel eyes and they looked sad. She straightened her black hair, a habit of hers when she had a rough time finding her words. June never wanted to hurt anyone in any way, so she was very careful how she spoke and how she acted all the time. It hurt Jake seeing his mother like this because of him. She had to come all the way to school and sit in this office listening to stuff she had no idea of. Jake never told his parents about his studies.
"Mom, I am sorry. Please don't be upset. I can do better, I will try harder."
June grabbed Jake's hand and smiled saying:
"Jake, why didn't you say something about this? We could have helped, you know."
"I didn't want to think I am stupid and you've both done so much for me I don't want to burden you."
"Jake you need to start acting your age. I am your mother and it is my job to worry about you, to take care of you. What would have happened if I didn't show up at school today?"
"So, Miss Aubrey didn't call you?"
This time it was Miss Aubrey who spoke:
"No, Jake. I didn't call your house. However, it seems like your mother had a feeling and she decided to come by herself. Jake you are not skipping classes, but you might as well do because your mind goes away. Your homework is ok, but other than that it is a disaster. It looks like anything you have to memorize it's a problem. What kind of problem do you encounter? Do you find it difficult to focus?"
"It's not that, I just flip in and out. I cannot control it, one moment I am in class and then I am again, but time passes. I don't remember anything in between. I don't understand myself what is happening. How can I explain it to someone else?"
"We will go see a doctor as soon as possible" said June. "I am sure there is nothing to worry about, just to get a professional's opinion". Miss Aubrey looked at June nodding. It seems this answer satisfied her mostly. Jake was angry. There was nothing wrong with him. He was not crazy.
"Mom, but I don't want to go to a doctor. I am just finding it hard to focus right now, I am not sick."
"Jake you should listen to your mother, she knows best" said Miss Aubrey looking at Jake seriously.
"I am sorry we have taken so much of your time Miss Aubrey. Come on Jake, I have some errands to run as well and we have to be home on time for dinner" June stood up straightening her dress. It was summer and she was wearing a lovely yellow dress. His mother was the same height as Jake and she was the most beautiful girl he has ever saw. As he stood up his mother put her arm around his shoulders.
"Thank you, Miss Aubrey. Have a lovely day!" and June slowly pushed Jake towards the door. Nobody spoke all the way to the car. Inside, his mother turned on the engine and they were driving in silence. When Jake no longer knew the road they were going he looked at his mom.
"Mom, where are we going?"
"We are going to see your dad."
"But you said he is on a business trip out of town."
"Well...technically, we are already out of town."
"I don't understand mom. Why are we going to see dad? This is not so serious, we don't have to make a big deal out of it. I will ask Sandra for some help with the classes that I am failing and I will even go to the doctor if that makes you happy. We don't have to disturb dad."
"He cares about you as well. It is only right to let him know about this."
"Where are we going anyway?" asked Jake because the road wasn't paved anymore and they were in some kind of woods. He could see only trees and it was so beautiful. He relaxed in his seat and watched the scenery.
