Chapter 10 - (There's) No Destiny Or Fate

Start from the beginning

Is that?

"Peter?" The guy turned and looked at me.

"Y/N? Is it really you?" He walked over to the counter, my eyes wide.

After all this time.

As soon as he was in close enough proximity, I pulled him into a hug. "Oh my gosh! It's been forever!"

"It has! I literally thought I'd never see you again!" Peter and I separated from the hug. "Oh my gosh, you look so different!"

"Me?! What about you? You gained like a whole 5 five inches on me! Not to mention, your hair." Peter's hair was dyed blue and he had much less acne than he had back in high school.

Is this a dream?

"Yeah, I got bored of the brown and eventually dyed it."

"Ahem." Peyton cleared her throat, pulling me back into reality.

"Oh! Peter! This is my friend Peyton! Peyton, this is Peter, my friend from high school."

"Nice to meet you Peter!" Peyton shook Peter's hand.

"Nice to meet you too." Peter turned to me. "So what are you doing here?"

"I actually work here."

"No way! That's awesome!"

"What are you doing in town? I don't think I've ever seen you around."

"I'm in town visiting my grandfather."

"Aww that's so sweet of you."

"Yeah, he's had a little trouble getting around since his wife passed a few months ago. So, I'm living with him until he can get into a nursing home."

Just as sweet as I remember.

"I'd love to catch up with you. It's been years since we've seen each other. Are you free at some point?" Peter asked.

"I've got time after work. I get out at 4. We could go grab some froyo at the new place downtown."

"I thought I was gonna take you!" Peyton said, seemingly offended.

"That's right! I swear we'll go at some point Peyton."

"Alright, as long as you promise."

"I promise."

I turned back towards Peter. "So, 4?"

"Definitely! See you there!" Peter gave me a hug before leaving the store and heading on his way.

"Ooooo, Y/N's got a date!" Peyton said cheerily.

"What? It's not a date! We're just catching up."

"Y/N, it's totally a date. Did you even see the way he was looking at you?"

"We were best friends and we haven't seen each other in years. Of course, he's going to be nostalgic."

"He's attractive and you know him super well! There's no reason for you to not try and date him. What? Is there some other guy?"

No.

Unless you count Beetlejuice.

But he wasn't really a contender.

Right?

I shook off the thought of Beetlejuice and tried to focus on my conversation with Peyton.

It seemed like ever since that night, I felt differently. I didn't even know how to describe it. Beetlejuice was just a demon that I had accidentally brought into my life. He wasn't even necessarily my friend.

Yes, he is.

Why would you say that?

Ok, so he was my friend!

But I didn't have feelings for him.

"No, there isn't a another guy."

"So, go after him!"

"Fine, you're right. He is really cute and he's really nice. And we already have a lot in common. So fine, I'll go for it." Peyton squealed and gave me a big hug.

"Awww, I'm so happy for you! And I'm sorry about my peer pressure."

"No, it's alright. I should take opportunities given to me."

"If you guys end up dating, we could have a double date!"

"Aww, Peyton. That sounds really fun."

"If you're there, of course it's gonna be fun!"

As I worked through my shift, the question still ran through my mind.

I couldn't get it out of my mind.

It was like a parasite.

Would he?

I did my best to shake the question from my mind. I didn't need to be worrying about Beetlejuice right now.

I had a date.
