17. Personal Questions

Start from the beginning
                                    

Devan opened his mouth to respond, but then closed it.

“Maybe I should run off again to give you an excuse.”

“I’d rather you didn’t.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t want to have to worry about it again.”

“You were worried?”

Devan rolled his eyes. “It’s just extra stress that I don’t need, so I would appreciate it if you would just stay in the house.”

“When was the last time you sat and had a normal conversation with Melly?”

He didn’t answer.

“When was the last time Melly was out of the house alone?”

“Scout, you’re pushing it.”

I sighed. “Do you have something against questions?”

“No, it’s only against certain questions. Personal questions.”

“What’s your favorite color?”

My question caught him off guard.

“I don’t know,” He said.

“What color appeals to you most?”

“I don’t know. Red?”

“Favorite animal?”

“I have no idea. Just not birds.”

“Why not birds?”

“They freak me out.”

“Then why do you have a tattoo of a bird?”

“It was a joke.”

“A permanent joke,” I pointed out.

“A reminder of good times.”

“What’s your favorite…um, food?”

“I don’t know. I guess Italian.”

“How do you not know your favorite things?”

“I don’t pay attention to those things.”

“It’s not something you pay attention to. They’re things about you that are you.”

“Then what’s your favorite color?” He asked
