2. Neighborhood Kids

I couldn’t help but think of the next-door kids.

Yes, three girls, and two boys lived next door to us, which could sometimes be a major problem. Anna, Jenna, Angela, Scott, and Rigby all lived next door to us.

They each had different personalities. I can’t say I liked this about them though.

Scott was a complete airhead. So when he came up to our door this morning, I slammed it in his scrunched face.

“What did you do that for, Jewels?” Matt asked, opening the door again.

Scott’s arm was raised ready to knock again.

“Hey Matt, what’s going on?”

“What do you mean what’s going on?”

“Your bratty little sister slammed the door in my face.”

“Maybe I should slam the door on your face.”

“Why I outta…”

“Jewels. Go help mom make breakfast.”

No. I hated that saying. Jewels, go help mom clean the kitchen.

Jewels go help mom knit sweaters.

Jewels go be a girl and do your ratty hair.

It was all the same…and I absolutely hated when people said that to me.

I ran away, sticking my tongue out at Scott.

I began to get teary-eyed all because my brother was being a big rotten jerk.

I wasn’t allowed to say that to his face though, or else I would get in a big amount of trouble.

I spotted my mom frying crispy bacon in the frying pan. Her hair was done up in a mess.

“Momma, Matthew is being a big butt!”

“Julia! Don’t say that about your brothers!”

“-but if you think about it…”

“Julia.” Mom gave me the ‘warning’ look.

Gulp, “Okay.”

She shooed me away with her hands, and I ran upstairs, clutching my pillow and sobbing into it.

Nobody understood. I wanted to be…more…than a housewife. The first woman to make a fantastic discovery.

I would show them, and they would come crying to me when they were poor and helpless.

Except for Joe, our mansions would be connected together.

I grabbed my science book, and began to read. I had to study for my great discovery.

“Jewels, Jewels, JEWELS!”

“Huh?”

I awoke with a start, the October air filled my bedroom. I looked up to see Rose, hovering over my sleeping body.

“How long was I asleep?” I yawned.

“About three hours. Lunch is almost ready. Let’s go wash your face.”

She brought me to the bathroom; I stuck my head underneath faucet, and she turned the water on. I sighed as the warm water ran down my neck.

She grabbed a rag, and wiped my face.

“Better now?”

I nodded hastily, grabbing a brush, and combing my hair.

She brought me downstairs, and we sat at the table. Matt, and Joe could be spotted outside with Rigby, and Scott.

“Matt! Joseph! It’s lunch time!”

They emerged to the front porch.

Mom shot me a look, and opened her mouth to speak. “Where were you? You missed breakfast.”

Oh no. My mom didn’t approve of naps. “I…was into a good book, and I-“

She had turned her back to me, grabbing a tray filled with sandwiches.

“PB&J for Matt.” She placed the sandwich in front of matt.

“PB&J for Joe.”

“Tuna for Roselynn.”

“-and last, but not least, Turkey, for Julia.” She set the sandwich in front of me, and kissed my head.

“You can go outside when you have finished your sandwiches.”

I ate quickly, eager to go outside and beat Rigby at tetherball.

(Like I always would.)
