Jordan

I don't know why I found myself laughing so hard, but I couldn't stop. My breaths came in quick gasps between my unstoppable giggles. Tears gathered in the corners of my eyes, threatening to spill over.

Adam whipped his head to where I stood and shot me a glare, bringing me out of my laughing fit. Clearly, he didn't find our predicament as amusing as I did.

"I don't think being out in the pouring rain in the middle of nowhere is a laughing matter, Jordan." He hissed, rolling his eyes once I met his gaze.

"It's not like we're lost." I said, and we weren't. I knew exactly where we were at. "And the rain isn't going to kill us." I added.

"Yeah, but now we're soaked." He whined, dragging his hands down the sides of his head pulling the skin on his face down with them, making him look ten years older.

"And we'll dry, stop being a baby." This time I was the one rolling my eyes. His grumpiness wasn't just annoying but also seemed to turn him into a child.

"You're the one who got us into this mess." He groaned, practically dragging himself as he followed close behind me.

"No need to point fingers." I turned on my heel to face him. "You were already leaving and had a choice to come with me or not, and you chose to tag along." I snapped. There was no way I was going to let him pull the victim card.

"I wasn't going to let you go by yourself!" His eyebrows furrowed, small wrinkles took form on his forehead. I softened at this, maybe he does care. "I'd be an asshole if I left a little girl to defend herself in...god knows where!"

He thought I was weak.

"I didn't need your help then, Don't think that I need it now." I reminded him coldly and turned back around to continue walking. Hearing his dragging footsteps shortly after, I smiled.

"We should be close soon." I glanced at the watch that hugged my wrist. It's been 39 hours since we left. "We can stop if you'd like." I suggested.

"No. Keep going." He sighed, "the sooner we get there the better." And for the first time since I met him, I couldn't agree more.

I could see for what seemed like miles in every direction I looked, something that wasn't possible in the city as it was surrounded by a cement wall.

It's main purpose was to keep the evil from the outside world from destroying the city, but I knew better than that. Apparently Adam did too. While, literally, running from the life I planned to leave inside of the city walls I crossed paths with Adam. Who just happened to be running from life as he knows it as well.

"Hey! The rain stopped!" A wide grin was plastered on his face, he faced me with bright eyes.

Holding my hands out, I waited for a rain drop to come into contact with my palm. Nothing. He was right. Returning a smile I skipped a few steps before coming to a halt, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath in.

"It's nice isn't it?" Adam appeared at my right, his eyes shut taking in the sun.

"It's fucking amazing." I couldn't stop the stupid smile from forming on my face, the warm feeling overwhelming my body was unfamiliar.

We stood there for a few moments, soaking in all that has happened in the past two days. Letting the fact that there was absolutely no going back settle in.

"How much longer?" He questioned, narrowing his eyes taking in his surroundings.

"Just a few more hours at most." If what my brother told me was true, we should get to shelter as soon as possible. The thought excited me. I haven't seen my brother in six years, and I'm only a few hours away from reuniting with the only person I considered family again. That reminded me, why did Adam want to leave?
