This is my theory on how Remus can be good. Writers, take notes.
I honestly think he's like a warning, telling Thomas what NOT to do, what those without morals could do to him and what he could become if he lost his morals. He also tells Virgil what to protect Thomas from. Virgil and Patton's reactions to him move Thomas in a better direction in life. For example, imagine Thomas is approaching a dark alley. Remus would probably suggest hiding behind the dumpster and jumping someone. Patton would say no while Virgil freaks out about the possibility of someone doing that to them and get Thomas out of there. So, just like all sides, he protects Thomas. I'm open to other ideas, though.
