Mikka closed her eyes and took a deep breath before opening her eyes again: her eyes sparkling with determination, "I'll do it. I'll split my life in two for him. If you don't do it for me, I'll look for another reaper to do it. I don't care about what happens to me. Help me, please."
The reaper gave Mikka a sad smile as she stretched her pale hand for Mikka to take, "Your wish is my command, old friend."
Mikka took the hand offered without hesitation and as she felt her life draining away, she thought of how she had ended up in that situation.
It had all started 115 years ago when the Council put her friends in a deep sleep. She had watched as each one of them fell into their pods and had closed their eyes. She had stopped in front of her charges; the twins were peacefully asleep. They looked so young... And they were, but after everything they had gone through they both looked older, their handsome faces appeared scarred and tired. She had felt a pang of guilt resonate deep inside her chest and she had worried her bottom lip between her teeth. She tried to memorize her charges' faces: the shape, the dips, the practical short hair Ezequiel had and the hairstyle that Nathaniel insisted was really stylish. She had let a watery laugh as to stop the tears threatening to fall. She had sniffed and then squared her shoulders. It would be the first time to separate herself from her boys after the Incident which caused Nathaniel to fall off a cliff and Ezequiel to find the Supernatural. She had felt her bottom lip start to quiver and she worried it again.
"We will be going soon, Mikaela", called her superior, an angel known as Daniel. He was also the father of her best friend and therefore, he had a soft spot for her.
"That's alright. May I stay a few more moments to say goodbye, sir?", Mikka turned to look at Daniel with a pleading look in her eyes, "Please, you know I... I need it."
Daniel gave her a soft smile, "Of course you can. Everyone will be waiting for you at the entrance. However, try to make it quick, we still have some things to take care of in the office. Go ahead now, say goodbye to the boys." Daniel shot her another warm smile before walking out of the room.
Mikka squared her shoulders and gazed inside the pods once more. Her gaze glazed over as she took in Nathaniel's wings and Ezequiel's scars, all signs of her failure as a guardian angel. She placed one hand on each pod's surface. "I will come back to you, and I will make things right, guys. I promise."
She left the room with that promise branded in her mind.
It continued less than a year ago, when Mikka had desperately tried to find Ezequiel after opening the pods room and finding out about his absence. She still remembers the despair she felt that day. Not even the relief of seeing everyone alive had calmed her. So she had tried to find him, again and again, without results. She convinced herself that if he were dead she would feel it and she carried on with, what her friends considered, an impossible feat. Even Nathaniel tried to make her desist on finding his brother. They had a terrible argument about it, she felt betrayed by him. She knew that the brothers did not have the perfect relationship, how could she not, after seeing years after years of fights and abuse. But she still felt angry about his decision.
So when she found proof that Ezequiel was alive somewhere she renewed her efforts to find him. She pulled strings, she contacted everyone she knew and even made some deals that she would probably regret later. But she did it. She found him. She remembered crying in her room when she received the letter that told her his location. She did not tell her friends about it though, because she knew that they would make her desist on going after him.
