I'm bad at love, but you can't blame me for trying
Halsey

Today my best friend was turning 25 - it's a big deal to us, since we've been friends since I was 16.

Let me get things broken down for you. My mother and father are from Guadalajara, Mexico. I guess technically I was too. When my mother found out she was pregnant she came across the boarder with my father, but only she became a citizen. We use to spend summers in Mexico with mi Abuelita. Spanish is my first language and growing up in a Hispanic neighborhood kept me fluent and gave me my accent; I learned English at 5 years old right in time for school. Mi hermanita Elena came along when I was 8, I love her to pieces. She was brought into this world at a time where my mom was getting sick. When we were 15 and 7 my dad passed away in Mexico and we moved across Texas. He had gone back to take care of my Abuelo's things and some crazy accident happened. That left my sick mother and sassy sister, but after two years my mothers cancer traveled to her brain and didn't leave her much time on this earth. Now she's un an angel en el cielo and she watches over her girls just like mi papa. Unfortunately Elena has a kidney disease that treatments are hardly touching anymore. One kidney is completely scarred while the other limits her activities and diets.

The last year has been difficult but I can say today was a slight relief. My best friend is a quarter of a century old and what other way to celebrate than a giant house party. I let Elena stay home because she was exhausted from the school day. I encouraged her to bring her oxygen pack and leave it in the locker if she was embarrassed but she is terco.

"Manita!" I yelled as I attempted to perfect my edges.
"Ya!?" She yelled from her room, which irritated me - she always yelled from another room and expected me to come to her.

"Ven aqui!!" I did her a favor and met her at her bedroom door considering she was tired. I was happy to see her oxygen pack was hooked to her, though it saddened me at the same time.
"Ayeee Lupita," she snapped her fingers and swung her hips, making me laugh as I struck the same pose.
"Tell Mel that I said happy birthday and I love her." She reaches for a box of cereal and went back to playing her Xbox.

"Te amo mamí!" I called as I strutted out the door. My thin black heels echoed down the walk way and to the small one car drive of our house.
