Gary is a strange being in the world of Irn. Among all the outlandish adventures in the world, like slaying beasts, taming dragons, and obtaining infinite knowledge of magic, Gary somehow sticks out like a sore thumb. His life is as a simple farmer in a small farming village right in the middle of Arendal, the northeastern country mostly populated by humans.
He lives alone, no kids, no wife, not even any relatives. He does not drink or smoke, and lives a very modest life selling crops and trading. Gary has been in the village longer than anyone else, despite only looking in his early thirties. He has seen the generations of the metaphorical passing of the torch for village leaders. Many times he was offered the spot, but all times he has turned them down. He has participated in countless wars and has seen the rise and fall of many civilizations that no longer remain.
Rumor has it that he's a half elf, which would explain why he looks so young. But even half elves have pointed ears. Or maybe he sold his soul long ago to a demon who granted him the curse of eternal life. But Gary is full of life and has been inspected by a priest, he definitely has a soul. Then maybe he used some forbidden and ancient magic that prolongs life. No, Gary uses no magic, he has no curse, he is no elf, there are no redeeming features that make him special, but you would be wrong to call him human.
In this realm four heavenly beings rule the land. Tempus is the god of space and time, Thera is the goddess of creation and destruction, Nuo is the goddess of justice and balance, and Zeray is the god of magic and knowledge. Thera created the universe and made the three other gods to assist her in maintaining the world, nothing is created without her approval, but Gary is the sole exception. Gary was discovered about 50,000 years after humans were created. Nations had long since been created and man was in an iron age. She did not recognize him, as she did with everyone else, she recognized everything she created. She asked guidance in her fellow god, Tempus, who opened a window to peek into the past to spot his origin, but his life long extended past the first human's existence. The god even went so far back as to when Thera created herself, but there he was, Gary, floating in the empty void seeming to originate before time itself.
Since then the gods have tried and failed to remove Gary from their world. Their frustration had turned to fear as they now seem to serve under him, fearing that he is vastly more powerful than even a god capable of creating itself. However, Gary still acts like plain old Gary. Any prayer he makes towards the gods is instantly granted- food, water, clothes, a good harvest. Very miniscule things to a god, but very important to a normal human.
There is one thing Zeray has deduced after watching Gary for so long. He does not know. He does not know of his power, or his origin. He does not know of his important existence and feigns ignorance about his past. But if even Gary does not know of his own power, then what would happen if he did? Even the god of knowledge does not know what will happen if Gary finds out about himself. The unknown is Gary, and that is what frightens the gods the most.
