Chapter 1
I wake up in a dark and cold metal cage. When I try to find an exit, I realize with dread that there aren’t any doors. Standing up too quickly ends with me bumping my head against the ceiling and I fall back down, landing on my wrist funny and letting out a hiss of pain. The cage suddenly pulls me up; shaking and hitting the walls every once in while, causing me to lose my balance and tumble around. By the time it stops, my arms are full of scrapes all up and down the length of them. The top of the cage starts to open, the light of the sun so blinding I have to hug my legs and bury my face into my knees to keep my eyes from the brightness. Someone jumps down and pulls me up. I fall onto the grass and roll onto my side, clutching my wrist, knees to my chest.
“Another girl?” I can’t make out where the voice is coming from, but it’s full of confusion.
“Who cares? She’s hurt; we have to get her to Med-jacks!” Another voice shouts. Someone picks me up and carries me over to a small hut, where I’m placed gently on a cot.
