Chapter One
“Evanesce” I heard quick and as quiet as a whisper behind me.
I jerked my head behind me seeing nothing but the forest I was walking through. Where was I? How did I get here? “Evanesce” I heard again. I turned quickly back the direction I was walking. Nothing. I was sure I was the only one there; there was no sign of any trace of human or animal life anywhere. Just the moist ground I was walking on, moss-covered-rocks, and old bark on the tall, green and brown trees. I looked down to find myself different. My jeans and sneakers were replaced with a pure white dress as long as the bottom of my knees and no shoes at all. I stroked my hand through my hair, realizing that it has changed as well. The length I should say. The light brown waves were long passed my shoulders where they originally sat. “Evanesce” I heard again. I looked up without a hesitation. Nobody or nothing. “Hello?!” I shouted “is anybody here?!” I finished. “Evanesce, Evanesce, Evanesce, Evanesce” I heard in all 4 directions, I followed them all and began to get dizzy from turning but ran anyway. ”Evanesce, Evanesce, Evanesce, Evanesce, Evanesce, Evanesce, Evanesce” I heard in my ear as I was run, the farther I ran the louder my name got. I turned my head to take a quick look behind me but tripped as soon as my eyes were set on a faint, fuzzy figure. I turned and shielded myself with my arms and stinging palms, I was sure they were bleeding, my eyes shut tight. Through the pitch darkness behind my glued shut eyelids, there was a faint light and I began slowly opening my eyes. The light grew brighter. It was coming from the center of my chest. As I lowered my arms the lights brightness faded until my arms were in my lap and my eyes looking down at my chest staring at the swirl charm on the sterling silver chain that had been around my neck. “How did I not notice this before?” I thought taking it into my fingers and turning it in all different directions. “Evanesce” I heard this time right in front of me I looked up to find nothing again. I let out a sigh and looked back down at the mysterious charm. It stated shining again. Bright. I couldn’t see anything anymore; the light was getting to bright and burned my eyes. I glued them shut again. “EVANESCE, WAKE UP!” I opened my eyes seeing my 6 year old sister, Tori, on my belly, standing up threating to plop back down but I knocked her over to the other side of the bed before she could, she giggled and I sat up. “Can u get me some cereal?” Tori asked moving up to sit on her knees. I rubbed my eyes “yeah sure” I said removing the light green and hot pink comforter from my lap and placing one foot on the ground than the other than walked over to the door that was left open by Tori. Tori ran ahead of me but I hissed at her to walk so she wouldn’t fall. Victoria Massey-A.K.A Tori- was my 6 year old sister with brown curls and blue eyes. Tori got our mothers dark blue eyes and brown, curly hair while I got our fathers green eyes, light brown, wavy hair, and freckles. Tori was born a month and a half early, on Christmas, my only sister was born, momma calls Tori her miracle baby. Tori is very short for her age; when we went to Six Flags in July, someone thought she was 4 years old, its December now, Monday, the last day of school would be on Friday before we go into winter break and 3 weeks till Tori’s 7th birthday. We made it down the stairs and into the kitchen. “What kind of cereal do u want Tor?” I asked using my nickname for her. “Ciminom toast crunch” she said mis-pronouncing the word cinnamon. “Cinnamon Tor” I corrected her with a smile, she giggled. I got the box from the top shelf needing to stand on my tippy toes to reach. I was pretty short for being 14; I was 5 feet and a half. I got a bowl from the other side of the kitchen and poured the cinnamon deliciousness into the small glass bowl and poured 2% milk into it from the fridge and got a spoon and carried it to the table where Tori was already sitting. “Thank you sissy” Tori said before she took a bite. “You’re welcome Tor.” I said with a smile. I headed back up the stairs to my bedroom and closed the door. I got light blue jeans from my dresser and a white shirt from my closet and changed out of my green shorts and purple tank top into the jeans and shirt and put socks on. I walked into the bathroom and switched the light on. I brushed my hair and teeth and put eye liner along the bottom of my eye and mascara on my long, dark lashes and walked out. I grabbed my coat off of the back of my computer chair and put it on and zipped it halfway then got my backpack and walked out of my bedroom I walked down the hall to Tori’s room and glanced inside. She was putting her coat on. “Yah ready?” I asked startling her. “Yup” she said grabbing her butterfly backpack. She walked out her door in front of me and I walked behind her. After we got down the stairs I walked to the door were my sneakers were and slipped into those. Tori put on her black converse and we headed out the door to tori’s bus stop. Tori is in kindergarden at image elementary and I had to walk with her to her bus every morning at 7:15am and then walk to mine and wait till 7:30am for the bus. Tori started running when she saw her best friend Kylie Banks standing in the cold, dry weather with her older brother Dakota, he was in the same grade as me. “Kylie!” Tori called loud to her blonde haired friend as she ran. Kylie turned along with Dakota and everybody else at the bus stop, Kylie began running as well. When the two small girls reached each other, they hugged and I couldn’t help but smile. I looked at Dakota Banks, it amazed me how much him and his sister looked so much alike; same blonde hair, same dark blue eyes, and freckles. I don’t really talk to Dakota but in August, our sisters were outside riding there pink bikes with training wheels and Dakota and I were riding our skateboards and Kylie asked her big brother if he could take them to the park and so we all rode down to the park and to my surprise had a good time, we even taught our sisters how to balance on a skateboard while it was moving, it was fun and the girls really enjoyed their lesson. Dakota Banks, blonde hair mixed with brown that went down to the end of his neck, he's a little shorter than me but you can tell that he's grown since 7th grade- we are in 9th now- Dakota is older than me by 4 months, his birthdays in January and mines in May, he has bright blue eyes and freckles that cover his nose and cheek bones. Even though we're in high school, he can’t seem to let the little kid in him go. When we were in 8th grade I was watching some guys play football at lunch and one of them were him and he kept kicking the ball like it was soccer, I laughed at him but he didn’t seem to mind, I think he liked the attention. He first transferred to Aurora Middle School 2 months after school started in 7th grade. When I first saw him when I got to 3rd period, the first thing that popped in my head was “wow, that’s a lot of freckles and blonde hair” talk about A.D.D. ha-ha. When I took my seat in the front of the classroom, I looked to the back of the classroom where he sat; he was talking to Kohlton Spangler. Who would have known that those two would have become best friends? Well, they did and now it seems that the only time when they part is classes that they don’t have together, when they go to the bathroom, and when they sleep. Other than that, there always together. I think it’s kind of funny. When Tori's bus came to take the kids at the bus stop, I walked back home to get my stuff and walked to my bus stop. Dakota rode the same bus as me so I see him every morning but he mostly just talked to Duncan. Duncan Johnson, tall, blonde hair about as long as Dakota's just puffier and a brighter shade of blonde. I went to elementary school with Duncan and kind of have a crush on him. Ha-ha, since 5th grade I’ve really liked this kid. He has bright green eyes and a warming smile that I see when he and I are laughing. It’s easy to make him laugh and smile, his cheeks turn red too, it’s just adorable. I was told he liked me back when we were in 8th grade by my two friends Adriana and Kristy, Kristy asked him what he thought of me and his response was a smile, cheeks red, looking at me from a distance and "I like her” when Kristy and Adriana told me what he said, I was all smiley and giggly for the rest of the day, I couldn’t help it, it was a worth-smiling-and-giggling-moment. Like Dakota, Duncan was older than me but Dakota was older than Duncan by about a month; Duncan was born in February. I wasn’t going to be 15 till May but the boy’s r still 14 like me. When the bus got to the bus stop everybody walked up the three steps and took a seat. Duncan and Dakota sat next to each other 3 seats in front of me I stared at the back of Duncan's puff of blonde hair and got lost in a daydream. Daydream was broken when Ely plopped down next to me. Ely Bonder, my best friend since preschool. Ely has brown, curly hair, brown eyes, and faded freckles on his cheeks. When he plopped down on the blue seat I jumped cause he kind of startled me “yah little jumpy there Evan” he said smiling “yah okay?” he asked continuing his sentance. “yeah I am fine just off in dream world again” I said still looking at the back of Duncan's head. Ely knew about my crush. He looked at Duncan's head like I was “are you two ever going to hook up?” he asked I thought he was teasing me like regularly but he actually sounded serious. I looked at Ely “I don’t know” I said sitting back against the back of the seat. “You should ask him to farewell” Ely said. Farewell was an after school event for 8th graders only; kind of like a goodbye dance. "I don’t know about that…” I said trailing off. “Why? You two like each other right? So why not?” Ely asked too many questions for me to keep track of. “You know why E. you know how I get all nervous and shaky. And yeah we both like each other and if he likes me the way I think he does he'll probably end up asking me.” I said looking at Ely as I talked. Ely looked at Duncan and looked back at me with that cheeky smile. “He's looking at you” he said still using that cheeky smile that irritated me at times. I looked at Duncan to see that Ely wasn’t lying, Duncan was looking at me and he was smiling. I felt all shaky and the daily butterflies came back. I was sure I was blushing. Duncan looked back in front of him and I looked at Ely, he was still doing that cheeky smile “Can you stop doing that?” I said pushing him out of the seat. He laughed. “Well stop being all week-need for him and clear things up with each other. All you two ever do is laugh and smile at each other.” Ely said getting back into the seat. “Well I am sorry, blame him for the way I act” I said with a smile, Ely just shook his head smiling. I looked at Duncan and smiled tilting my head. Duncan looked back at me I stopped smiling and put on a panic face; I didn’t know what to do I was lost in his green eyes, he usually had that effect on me. I’m guessing he saw my difficulty and smiled anyway, a little sparkle to his eyes in the process. Butterflies were stronger than ever at that moment. When we got to school, Ely and I walked to the student center; cafeteria, like usually to go where our other friends were. Duncan and Dakota walked in front of us going to the same place. I was stuck in a daydream still walking, I think I should try to resist doing so because this was the 5th time I’ve bumped into somebody on accident this week, heh-heh. The boy I bumped into I didn’t recognize, the other 4 people that I bumped into were either teachers or class mates but this kid was different. He had long brown hair, freckles, and dark brown eyes that stared into mine; I had to look up because the boy was taller than me. “s-sorry” I tried. The boy just nodded and continued walking passed me. I watched him as he walked away. “Who was that?” I asked Ely, hoping he was still with me. “I have no idea” I heard him say from my side, I was still looking at the boy I bumped into. The boy wore a black hoodie with his hood up and gray jeans that weren’t too baggie, not to tight, with black converse. He turned the corner but I wasn’t sure if it was just me or if he really did slow down to take a last glance at me. I wasn’t sure. When Ely and I got into the cafeteria, I walked toward Bri. Brittney Harkens A.K.A. Bri. She had long blonde hair that went to her ribs and blue eyes, she smiled at me when she saw me walking toward her, I smiled also but I guess from the way Bri looked at me I must of looked confused or lost or something. “Are you okay?” she asked “Yeah I’m fine” I said reassuring her that I was. I didn’t lie, I was okay, I just couldn’t get that boy out of my head. “Hey, I’m going to go put my backpack in my class room, I’ll be back in a little bit” I said to Bri as I began to turn to walk in the other direction of my 1st period, humanities with Mr. Johns. “Okay” Bri said. I walked out of the cafeteria and down the long hallway where lockers were screwed to walls and posters were stapled from student’s class projects. I began opening the green door but instantly stopped when I saw what was inside. The boy! The BOY! I thought to myself as I shut the green door as quickly as I could I panicked. “What am I going to do!?” I said silently out loud to myself. I guess some courage started building up because I turned the door knob but the door opened before I could manage to do it myself. I almost fell backward but caught hold of my balance with a little help. The boy grabbed my arm helping me to gain balance. “You okay?” he asked letting go of me “Y- yeah” I said stuttering again. He squinted at me as if trying to recognize an old friend or a lost relative. “Aren’t you that girl from this morning?” he asked me still squinting. I nodded. “Oh… well… hi…” he said trailing off between words. “Hi… sorry about that though I was kind of off in my own little world” I said doing a twirling finger from my head to the ceiling. “Really? What's it like?” he asked with a smile as he leaned up against the wall beside him. I gave him a small smile kind of squinting. “Well… full of things that interest me” I said thinking about Duncan “Interesting” he said. I just shrugged. The door opened and appeared Mr. Johns. “Dominic, can I see you for one more thing?” Mr. Johns asked “Good morning Evanesce” he added looking in my direction with a smile, I nodded “Morning sir” I said he smiled and walked into the class room followed by Dominic, followed by me. I walked to my desk and put my backpack in the seat and sat on the table. I looked at our new student and got lost in a day dream which surprised me wildly, I started thinking about Dakota's first day at Aurora Middle. My day dream was broken by a hand being swung up and down in front of my eyes I blinked to see Dominic's tan, scar filled hand with a few scratches and scabs, I stared at it and then looked at Dominic's face. “What are you doing?” he asked looking at me confused. I just shrugged “What happen to your hand?” I asked looking back at his hand; it was still in my face, he took it away and looked at it himself as if he didn’t think I was telling the truth. “Oh, these” he said examining his hand “Uh yeah, I work on ATV's with my dad and on the weekends I go and ride some with him and my little brother” he said “Oh, I see” I said “Do you ride?” he asked “Kind of, last week I went” I said “Oh, that’s pretty cool, well maybe if you’re not busy this weekend, you want to go with me?” he asked. I looked at him with a weird face; he pulled on a face as if saying ‘well?’. "You just met me and now you're asking me if I want to go riding with you?” I said, he shrugged. “Okay, yeah, sure, I’ll go” I said with a smile just as the bell rang. He smiled and nodded at me he began to walk off but stopped short and said “I'm Dominic by the way.” “Evanesce” I said getting off the desk he smiled and then continued walking, I smiled back. I guess you could say that Dominic and I were flirting and I guess we were but that doesn’t mean that I like Dominic. Do I? Never mind. We read the entire class time but I glanced up a few times and sometimes at Dominic I looked at him about 5 times and two of those times he was looking at me too, we would just smile or laugh and Mr. Johns would glance over and we'd quickly look back down at our books to a random part and start reading from there. It was actually kind of fun ha-ha. After the bell rang to inform freshman's that class was over, I opened my backpack and slipped in my book and zipped my backpack shut, putting it on my back as I got up. I started walking through a maze made of desks to get to the classroom door I walked out. Dominic was just standing there leaning against the wall with his arms crossed against his chest like he did earlier. I stopped and just looked at him with the weirdest expression. He burst into laughter and dropped his arms and shuffled his feet “uh… do you think you could show me where Mr. Lewis’s class is?” he asked looking around, was he embarrassed for asking a girl for directions? I think yes. “Yeah, sure, that’s my next class anyway so why not” I said shifting my weight to the left of me with my hand on my waist. He smiled and started walking; he was going the opposite direction. He stopped and turned around, he looked awfully confused. I gave him a hint by pointing my thumb behind me. He looked at the ground as he walk back to me, I laughed at him; I know it was mean but this kid was to blame, and anyway he started laughing to. I joined him when he just barely passed me, did he notice? He was still looking at the ground. He looked up at me and held his stare as we walked down the hall, I didn’t stare back but I watched him from the corner of my eye. I saw his head turn forward and suddenly just stop. I stopped to and looked at him then to what had stopped him. What’s he doing? I asked to myself. He was staring straight at Leo Penske it looked like. I looked back at him and when I did I could of sworn I saw his eyes change from a dark brown to a golden color and a glowing from his chest.
