I didn't always know that I'd been missing half of myself since the day I was born. When I found out my entire life was never the same again.
It all started the day I was born, but we'll get to that part later. I'll start with 3 days before my 16th birthday. I was so excited. I was going on a weekend camping trip with my foster family at the time. Well more like my foster dad and brother. My foster mom provided the income, while Steve, my foster dad, did the household things. She wasn't able to come on the trip because she had to work.
I was sad that she couldn't come, but I decided that one birthday didn't matter if I still had the next with her.
I've given you a basis but let's go deeper into the story.
I walk into school happier than I had ever been. I got to go camping in three days time. I walked up to my best friend Kayla who was making out with her boyfriend Jake. Ever since she turned 16, they've been practically inseparable, even more than before.
I live in a big city, so even if I move foster homes, I usually stay in the same school.
"Hey, Kayla. Hey, Jake." I make my presence known.
"Oh, Hey, Stella." They say in unison.
"So you excited for the big camping trip this weekend?" Kayla asks nonchalantly.
"Oh my gosh, yes. I've always wanted to go camping." I squeal.
"I'm gonna go talk to the guys," Jake says, obviously put off by my squeals. Kayla and I just laugh as he leaves.
I look down at my watch, "shoot, we have 5 minutes to get to the track."
"We can get there in 3." Kayla says. It true we could. I've been an exceptional runner my whole life. I barely even have to try. We run and get to the locker room and get dressed. We get out of the field house in record time. We start running our mile as we get on the track. I finish in 5 minutes. We run normal the rest of practice.
I get home and Steve is cooking spaghetti. Fiona, my foster mom, got home around 7:00. Henry, my foster brother, comes out of his room at 6:00. He gets home and does work for his AP classes. We sit down to eat dinner.
"Stella I'm sorry I can't go on the camping trip. You know with work and all, but if you want to invite a Kayla, so your not the only girl, that'd be ok."
"Thank you, M... , Fiona." I slip almost saying mom. I've been with them for 5 years now. It feels nice being in one place so long, but on the chance that they decide they don't want me, I won't call them mom and dad. Steve and Fiona give each other a look.
"Stella, why don't you call Kayla, I need to talk to Steve and Henry about something." She suggests.
"Uhh... Ok." I get up and walk to my room.
I call Kayla, "Hey Kayla, do you wanna join my family and I on the camping trip?" I ask her.
"Sure, I love camping. Let me just call Jake, so he won't be worried if there's no cell reception." She says and we hang up.
The next couple of days went by as normal.
The time finally arrived when I get to go camping. Kayla and I were in the back seats, while, Steve and Henry were in the front seats.
We chatted the whole way there about what we would do. It didn't take, but 30 minutes to get to the campsites, but it still felt like a road trip.
We set up everything. The girls got a tent and the guys got a tent. We were far enough you could talk without hearing the other's conversations. We set up a fire and roasted marshmallows the whole night. As midnight approached, so did my birthday. Kayla and I were in our tent together. We were being loud and giggly. Steve never said anything, so I guess he couldn't hear us.
Midnight came and I began to feel... weird. It started out as a light headache you could say.
"I don't feel so good Kayla." My body started aching like it was dying and fighting to survive all at once. I screamed, but heard nothing, I only felt the pain.
Howling could be heard in the distance before everything went dark.
