ㄹ/을 때 (during/when)
this pattern is *used to express the time/occurrence of a particular action or state.* it has the same meaning as 'when or while'. Note that although -ㄹ/을 때 and 언제 can both be translated as 'when' in English, they have different meanings and functions in Korean. Then function of -ㄹ/을 때 is to *connect two sentences like 'the time when'.* on the other hand, 언제 *functions as an interrogative like 'when?' or 'what time?'.
-ㄹ/을 때 is used with verbs, adjectives, and 있다/없다. -ㄹ/을 때 is used with verb stems ending in a consonant, and -ㄹ/을 때 is used with verb stems ending in a vowel.
자다 ➡ 잘 때
첮다 ➡ 찾을 때
듣다 ➡ 들을 때 (irregular case)
살다 ➡ 살 때 (irregular case)
덥다 ➡ 더울 때 (irregular case)
Example sentences:
날씨가 좋을 때, 여행을 가겠습니다.
nalssiga joh-eul ddae, yeonghaeng-eul gagess-seubnida.
When the weather is good, I will take a trip.
한국에 올 때마다 한국 음식을 먹어요.
hangug-e ol ddaemada hangug eumsig-eul meog-eoyo.
whenever I come to Korea, I eat Korean food.
바쁘지 않을 때 전화해.
babbeuji anh-eul ddae jeonhwahae.
When you aren't busy, call me then.
일할 때는 일하고, 놀 때는 놀아라.
il-hal ddaeneun ilhago, nol ddaeneun nol-ala.
Work while you work, play while you play.
