"Ms. Jackson"
"Ms. Jackson" oh shit A.D.D at its finest. I come out of my daze; clear my throat and sit up straight. "yes.. I'm sorry I zoned out" Great now they will think I'm some teen who could not give two shits about what is going on. I heard some one snicker in the back; yep just what I needed. "I said you do realize the charges your facing... right" said the tall lady standing in front of the witness stand. Her outfit was perfectly pressed not a wrinkle in sight; her hair in a slick back ponytail with every hair in place. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes hoping that the last few days were just some crazy nightmare.
"no I don-" "murder in the first degree, fleeing and kidnaping now that adds up to some pretty long prison time and you only being 16 I could only imagen how scary that must be" I looked down at my shaky hands then back at her. "look I would hate to see such a young person have their life just striped away and put behind bars so I'm just going to need you to tell me EVERYTHING that happened on January 3 2020" she was now only inches away from me; I could smell her perfume that I'm pretty sure coast more than my life savings. I'm still trying to figure out how I ended up here in the first place; were it all went wrong.
January 2 2020
beep beep be- I hit snooze on my alarm hating today already. I stretched then sat at the foot of my bed; do I even really need a education . I think to myself but I was ripped from my gaze by a tired looking little girl. "Sami do we have to go to school today" my 7 year old sister asked; I rolled my eyes with a giggle. "Emma you ask the same thing everyday" I say she only huffs and plops down onto my bed. "I know but I'm just so tired and school is just so boring I just wanna stay home with my awesome big sister" she said with the puppy dog eyes to the max.
"when was the last time you missed school" I asked grabbing my phone to check the time. "ummm December 1" she said with a proud smile. I put my hand on her head to ruff up her already messed up hair. "ok fine you win this round but you have to be on your A game tomorrow AT school ok" I asked she only smiled nodding her head fast. I was attracted into a huge hug. "thank you your the best" she says running out to what I'm guessing to her room. I got up and walked to the bathroom and almost jumped at my reflection. Damn I need some work; I brushed my hair and teeth to were I almost looked presentable. I then walked back to my room to pick out a outfit.
Once I was done I made my way to the kitchen to make breakfast. I opened the cabinet; no food I opened the refrigerator no food. "Emma get ready looks like were going out to eat" I yelled I hared the Livingroom TV on; oh no the beast is up. "glad I was invited" my mom says not looking from the TV screen. "Didn't think you would want to" I say simply rolling my eyes. she let out a bitter laugh shaking her head then looked at me. "just go spend MY money its fine" she says looking back at the TV. I waked into Emma's room I didn't even say anything she saw the look on my face and made her way to the front door. "And just a FYI "your" money yea the state gives that to you so you can feed your kid and I'm pretty sure you cant get payed sitting around all day getting high"
With that I slammed the front door I made my way down the stairs with Emma hot on my heals. "I'm sorry" is all I said as we walked out the door of the apartment building. "for what" Emma asked as we walled down the sidewalk to our favorite diner two blocks away. "I'm sorry that you don't have the mom you disserve" I say as we stopped and waited for the crosswalk light to show we could go. Emma grabbed my hand as we crossed the street and kissed the back of it. "why would I need a mom when I have a big sister that's even better" she says looking up at me; damn it man that hit the feeling hard. I smiled and kissed the top of her head. The diner was in eyeshot and you could practically hear our stomachs from a mile away. As we opened the doors our noses were blessed by the smell of all things good in life... food.
"now look who we have here Ms. Sami and Ms. Emma now why is you not is school" Whitney says; she is a middle aged black lady who has been working here since I could remember she has done more for me then my mom has so she has a special place in my heart. "we're having a sisters day" Emma says with a smile as she gave Whitney a hug. She knows how our home life is so she took us under her wing when we needed her. "mhm now go to you guys booth and I'll get your usual" she says making her way to the kitchen; me and Emma walked to the booth that we have been siting at every Saturday and Sunday for years. Whitney walked back with our drinks. "a milk for you and a sprite for you" she says as she set the glasses down; she then sat down next to me and had a look like 'I know somethings wrong' "ok so what did she say this time" she asked as I took a sip of my cold milk. "she was mad because I didn't invite her but its fine you know we can just spend up all her money that she dose not work for" I say looking at the water droplets rolling down my glass. I saw Whitney shake her head in disbelief.
"I swear that women is just a no good as-" "there are kids present" I say with a giggle and looked at Emma who was coloring in her menu. Whitney giggled as well pulling me into a hug. "you know you guys are always welcome at my house right" she says and I nodded hugging back; me and Emma have stayed there a few times when things got too bad at home. Once we pulled back from the hug she kissed my forehead and went back to see if our food was ready. It didn't take long for her to reaper with a plate in each hand. She sat my omelet in front of me and Emma's pancakes in front of her. before the plate could touch the table we were eating as if we hadn't in 2 weeks. Not long after our food was gone and I waved over Whitney over to pay; I couldn't even get my wallet without her stopping me. "put that damn thing away and go have fun girls" she said smiling we got up and hugged her then left.
"so what do you wanna do on our 'sister day'" I asked Emma as we passed a park with no kids because of school. "can we go to the beach it hot" she asked I smiled and nodded; we then started our journey to the beach.
