"Run faster Raven! They're closing in on us!" Harriet yells after me but my focus is somewhere else. I am paying all my attention to the creatures that are on our heels. I know I'm attractive, but damn. My mind is racing as to how we are going to get out of this. Plan A: We run until we die or make it to our beat up Trans Am, and the ladder seems impossible in this dust storm. Plan B: I could try and shoot them, but the creatures might take us captive and kill us or turn us into mindless zombies. Wow, our future sure does seem bright! Just as I'm about to turn around and Plan B into action, I glance ahead of us and see our salvation in the form of a rust bucket on wheels. I grab Harriet's hand and it's like my turbo busters were on, we both used the last bit of energy we could muster to close the gap between us and home. Harriet jumps into the driver's seat while I slide into the passengers then proceed to zap the scum that had been following us. Within the next minute we were driving almost 90 down a desert road.
"WooooHooo, that was awesome!" I yell out the window letting my hair follow the wind violently.
"Oh, really? Which part exactly? The part where we were almost captured at a BLI facility or the part were Dracs almost got us?" She retorts back clearly annoyed by my excitement.
"C'mon! I know it was a close call but we got the job done! We blew up the facility and saved TONS of people from turning into those things! Be happy!" I say nudging her arm,
"Ok fine. What we did was pretty awesome, even though we were almost dusted." She flashed me a smile and then turned her attention to the road
"Yes! See, that's the sprit" I smile brightly back at her.
Harriet slightly chuckles and reaches for the dust coated, which most of car was, radio turning it to 109. Our favorite, and really only, DJ burst our eardrums in the best way. "Look Alive Sunshine." He is our only source of information about the other killjoys who fight beside us against BLI. Better Living Industries or BLI is company that started out as a small pharmacy chain than developed into a huge corporation that is now running our post-apocalyptic country. Thankfully, with BLI being the great people-ish things they are, they kept our as one big giant cluster fu- I mean figure head. Most of the population is hopped up on BLI drugs; that basically turn them into addicted brainwashed zombies that only think about BLI and how great they are. Yup, they sure are pretty great.
After we hear a weird buzzing for a few minutes, as usual because he was off the air, we hear a loud click and a voice that sounds like my grandfather's booms with excitement through the speakers. "Now, I just heard the news of a dynamite duo taking down a rex sized BLI facility. We don't have any info on who they are or even what they look like but!..... Hey girls, if you're listening well done and if you ever need a spot to sit good ole Dr. D will be glad to deliver." His voice changed tone, almost as if he knew we were listening.
"Ha! That would be great right now, if only we knew where his hideout was." Harriet smiled jokingly.
"I don't know, it's just kinda weird. How did he know about us so quickly and he's never offered us a place to stay before." We are on Dr. D's show pretty frequently for blowing up facilities, freeing our fellow vigilantes that were captured, etc. Yeah, I know we're awesome. I think he's trying to send us a message." I say dramatically staring out of the window to add affect.
"I think you think too much, he doesn't know anything about us and vice versa. Plus his hideout I rumored to be around the Seattle area not down an abandon desert road."
"I guess you have a point...." I trailed off and continued my dramatic staring out of the window until I fell asleep and drifted into dreamland.
