The Knife

I was awoken by my mother at nine o’clock in the morning. She had said that I was running late for school and that I was going to be expelled from my school if I had missed any more days of school throughout the rest of the year. I hurried and got dressed and I was about to leave for school and I had noticed a bottle on top of the toilet with a piece of paper that was underneath it that had said to pee in it. I debated on peeing in it because I already knew it was for my Father. He had an interview for a new job today and he knew that they would be doing a drug test on him. He always asked me to pee in a bottle for him so he could pass his drug tests. I decided to just pee in it not really caring if I would get in to trouble for it or not.

I arrived at the school around ten o’clock. I went to my classes like normal. Didn’t really pay any attention in the class. I just like to mess around with my friends or sleep during class because I didn’t think that the class was of any importance.

After school I would go to Track practice where I ran the 100-meter, 200-meter, long jump and the high jump. In the middle of the practice I received a phone call from my mother saying that my grandpa had passed away I was broken on the inside because I always loved spending time with him. After that call I went up to my coach and explained to him the phone call I just received and asked if I could go home to cheer up my parents and to go over to my grandma’s house. He said “Yes you can go home. If you need to take tomorrow off as well then you can. Tell you parents my condolences.” I race home to find my mom sitting on the porch crying her eyes out. I go and comfort her and tell her everything will be fine.

A few months had passed and everything seemed to be getting better as far as I knew. I had the same routine every day. I would wake up take a shower, eat breakfast, and run to school. After school I would go to track and then go home. I was excited today because I was told that I had an invitation to go to a Track meet that was out of state. I just had to pay $100 to go so I ran home and told my mom the good news but she had said that they didn’t have any money because my dad lost his job because he didn’t want to get up and go to work. At that point I went around the neighborhood asking neighbors if there was anything that I could do to earn a little bit of money from them so I could go to the track meet. By the end of the day I had all the money that I needed to go to the track meet. I was so excited to go and tell my mother that I was able to go! She told me that she was proud of me for working for my own money. Later that night she had given me a piggy bank to put the money in to keep it safe. I put it right above the fireplace.

The next morning, I woke up and the piggy bank was shattered and my mother was crying. She had blood on her and bruises everywhere I was concerned on what happened. She told me that it was nothing that I needed to worry about and to just go to school. I listened to what she had told me to do. I did my normal routine and started running home. I was about half way home and I saw an ambulance fly past me with the lights on. I heard my phone start ringing so I look at it and it was my grandma calling me. I answered and she said “Do not go home, come over here and I will explain everything.” I was concerned because I remembered what I had saw in the morning. I decided to ignore what she said and when I got a couple houses away from being home, I saw a lot of police cars and the ambulance I had saw earlier.

I went up and I saw my mom getting carried out on a stretcher. I also saw my dad in handcuffs getting escorted into the police car. He looked at me and said “Don’t trust anything that your grandma says”. I didn’t know what to do so I just went to my grandma's house. She told me that everything will be okay and that she would explain to me at dinner. I waited around for dinner not doing anything except thinking what my father had said to me. It was finally dinner time; she had said to me that my dad has been doing heroin and that he took the money that I earned and spent it on some drugs. When he was coming down from his high, he started to throw things and abuse my mother. He ended up killing her and he would be going to prison for a long time. She said in the morning we will stop by the house so I can get all my stuff to take It to her house.

When I entered the house, it seemed dark there was broken plates everywhere. Everything was broken it seemed like a tornado had gone through the house and destroyed it. I went to my bedroom and started to pack everything that I needed into bags and then I heard a strange noise coming from down the hallway. I was nervous but I stepped into the hallway and looked at my parent's room door. Under the door it was dark but then all of a sudden there was a bright light so I was curious as I go closer to the door, I heard talking which was weird because there was no one else in the house. When I touched the door handle it was extremely cold. I opened the door and it was complete darkness, I then heard a voice that said take a step to see the real world. I was extremely scared at that point so I shut the door and ran out the front door with all my stuff.

A couple years later I graduated high school and wanted to go back to the house. When I pulled up to the house it looked like no one had moved in to the house because the grass was about knee high and the house was dirty. I walked slowly up to the front door. I touched the door handle and I had a strange feeling that I shouldn’t be here. I kept going and opened the door and noticed the same thing under my parent's door. I got the courage to open the door and enter the room. When I did that, I saw my mom kneeling by the bed. It looked like she was praying, I then saw a shadowy figure in the corner. The figure grabbed something and started running toward my mother to try and protect her when I got to her it was too late; she was already covered in blood laying on the ground. I looked up and I saw a light and I heard a whisper in my ear telling me that everything will be okay and that don’t need to worry about anything.  I got chills that went down my spine, I looked back at my mother and she was floating towards the sky I tried to stop her. I got down on my knees and started crying saying “Why do you have to take her from me” I felt someone grab my shoulder and whisper in my ear that everything will be okay as soon as you wake up”. I then shut my eyes and I woke up in a hospital room with bandages around my stomach. I looked around the room and I saw my mother asleep in the chair. I tried to wake he up to ask what had happened. She woke up and started crying saying that it’s a miracle that I woke up. I asked what had happened she said “you've been in a coma for years. After your father was abusing me you tried to attack him to stop him from hurting me and he turned and stabbed you with a knife” I was confused on the dream that I had. I was so excited to have her back in my life I didn’t care about anything else in this world.
