< This is my entry for the Poetry Expressions 2020 contest ♥️ it's a nation wide contest. Last year I got past the first round & was published! I'm hoping this year to place ~ Side note, any feedback is gratefully accepted. I'm always looking to improve! >

Sometimes I used to dream
That before we were born
We were given a checklist

A series of selections, of choices to make
For everything from your gender
To the colours on your face

It seems I must be a God
For my dreams have come true
Although they feel more like nightmares

Why else would they laugh at the boy
The cross-eyed boy who lost the fight
Who broke down crying when they called him weak
It's not like he didn't choose to be, right?

Why else would they avoid the girl with the bad haircut
Who didn't bring her lunch bag to put on the shelf
Who's clothes were almost 3 sizes too big
She must have chosen this life for herself

Why else would they hit the boy
With the makeup and the tight dress
He clearly handpicked the shade of his skin
It must be his fault for this mess

Why else would they call her names
And jeer at the outfits she wore
Surely that couldn't have caused
The matching scars that her wrists bore

All of these people, surely, chose
To be these things, you'll agree
For why would you hate them
For being someone they didn't choose to be?
