The boy heard before he saw. There were birds twittering away and rustling through the branches above, the cold spring morning air bit at his uncovered face as he slowly sat up, flickering his eyes open and letting them adjust. leaves and paper rustled under him, but he didn't think to care, the only thing running circles through his head was a name.

Zane.

Who's Zane? I'm Zane. Me. Zane. Last Name? Don't know. What's a last name? What's last? What's this place?

His head was in a daze for a minute as basic logic flooded his brain, gifting him with the wonderful ability to think. And then get a headache. It was like being born, growing up, and learning. Only five billion times faster.

Forest, paper, leaves, wood, birds, light, wings, what's a beak? Bark? like a dog. But on trees. What's a tree? dogs bark on trees?

Wait what?

He tried to stand up and immediately fell backwards, hitting his head on a tree root protruding from the earth. Pain stabbed into the back of his skull, causing him to yell out, "Agh!" He almost didn't recognize his own voice, startling himself. Off to a wonderful start. He tried standing up again, leaning against the nearby tree to stabilize himself. Things were coming back to him, what a potato was, how to say 'hi', you know... the basics.

"Ugh.." He felt like collapsing, just passing back out and letting some animal kill him in his sleep. Who would remember him anyways? Not like he could know.

Jesus, that was dark. the word 'depressing' came to mind and he filed it into his ever-growing vocabulary. Nevertheless he couldn't just collapse, curiosity was a bugger and he wanted to know who and where he was. now that he was actually alive he noticed the papers on the ground and crouched down to pick one up, eyeing the roughly made kid's drawing on the front as he stood up. It was a simple stick figure, made with hurried scribbles, same as the trees around it.

"Huh..." The more he stared at it, the more it seemed to look instead like frantic drawings, made by someone mentally unstable, and the more he felt an odd sensation send a buzz up his spine and into the back of his skull.

The sensation told him to ball up the drawing and throw it as far as he could, run in some random direction and not stop until he passed out. another part of him told him that was crazy and stupid, the idea 'common sense' ringing like a gong. But what the hell? what sense or smarts did he have if he still didn't know how he even knew what the word "Taco' was? Instinct took over and He crumbled up the paper into a ball, but when he looked up to throw the god forsaken doodle there was a man standing in front of him. An unrealistically tall, slender Man in a suit.
