Sunday Morning grab your finest,
Sit in the pews,
Open the Bible,
Sing the hymns,
Hear the sermon.
Say 'Amen'
Amen.
Say 'Hallelujah'
Hallelujah.
Say 'God is Good'
All the time.
All the time?
All the time.
Even when rent is overdue?
All the time.
Even when my husband leaves?
All the time.
Even when my wife cheats?
All the time.
Even when my child was killed in the streets?
All the time.
Mother in the grave-
Father in debt-
Brother on the bottle-
Sister beat-
Cousin jailed-
Uncle drugged-
Aunt on life support-
All the time?
All the time.
And all the time?
God is good.
Why?
People are dying in the streets
Jumping in between the sheets
Virtues are on a leave
Addictions are causing grief
Clothing cutting off the sleeve
Declaring they don't believe
Reveling in sinful achievement
Biting into the apple like Eve.
How can God be good when no one is good?
How can the good of God bring us good,
When we don't believe in the goodness of God?
How can God come down to the good,
If the good can't be good for God?
Think, for a moment
The man giving up his seat
The lady sparing a dollar
The driver caring to wave hello
The teacher staying to help her student
The kid playing with the kid that was excluded
The stranger picking up the elder's cane
The mailman praying for someone's pain
The good that lives in us
Is the good that God loves.
Forgiving our neighbor seventy times seven times
Getting back up when we were brought back down
Lifting our heads and praising his name
Denying our flesh its desires
Humbling our ego and bowing down
Forcing our feet to step forward onto the narrow path
Stumbling, falling, dragging, crawling
Hoping one day we will make it to the pearly gates
Hear God's voice say
"Welcome, child. You have done well."
That is the good we seek and that God sees.
That is the good God wants us for.
So when I ask,
All the time?
All the time.
And all the time?
God is good.
