Eyes.  All I could remember were those eyes. They glowed like a cat’s but an incredible shade of green. I don’t remember feeling the water as it closed over my head.

I was drowning. I sank deeper into the water, where all I wanted to do was to get to those eyes. I felt like my lungs were going to explode, but suddenly I felt a strong pair of arms wrap around my waist.

I heard a wordless melody as I was carried slightly upwards. After that, everything went black.

When I came to, I found myself on the most beautiful beach. The sand was a very pale pink with touches of blue and green near the water’s edge.  I sat up not expecting to see what or who had saved me.

He was marvelous. He had long raven locks that hung down his back, stopping just past his shoulder blades. His skin was a delicious shade of brown, almost like chocolate had a love child with honey. I almost lost it when I looked into those eyes.

They were grass green with flecks of cinnamon and turquoise in them. I had never seen eyes this color before. I watched as he smiled at me. He cupped his hands and made a kind of a musical sounding yell.

Three more people came from behind me and one rose from the waves. She looked like a goddess herself, smooth bronze skin, Chocolate hair and her eyes, I couldn’t see them, but I knew they had to be just as fabulous as my rescuer.

One thing I noticed immediately, Ms. Goddess was completely naked when she stepped onto the beach. As were the others. Where exactly was I and why was everyone naked? I went to stand up and found that I couldn’t stand.
My legs were now covered with copper scales and where my brown toes used to be were fins the same copper color as my legs.

“Holy Moly Coly! I'M A FREAKIN MERMAID?!” I shouted holding up my fins. The goddess laughed and sat down near me. I was right, her eyes were blue grey, like the ocean during a storm. She placed her hand on my arm in a comforting way and then she spoke.

“Welcome, my lost child. We are so glad to have found you. I sent you dreams of this place. I am called Anaka. I have searched the world to find you.” said Anaka smiling. Her eyes twinkled.

“So I was always a mermaid?” I asked flopping my tail.

Anaka nodded. “Haven’t you always felt drawn to the water, even if it was not saltwater?” she asked.

I thought back past the images of those eyes. I had always felt more comfortable in the water. I felt better when I went into the ocean or a pond. I remembered how my parents were leary of the sea. I never understood why, until today. Anaka and the others went into the hut that sat back near what looked like a palm tree.

I was alone on the beach with the exception of my handsome rescuer. He helped me get into the waves. Once we were out past the breakers, he spoke to me. I heard his voice but it was in my head.
