Fade to Black

I was born to a world full of mischievous yellows, serene blues, glowing greens. I was born in a world filled to the brim, in fact, overflowing, with colour.

In my world, everything's a little bit brighter.

All around me, my friends, classmates, and brother grew up in a world of dull greys, fuzzy blacks, mind-numbing whites, waiting for the day when everything would change. The day that they would meet their soulmate. All the songs on the radio, every cliche book, poem, and play was about that day. They were jealous of me. Who was this freak? Has she already met her soulmate?

But what they didn't know was how hard it could be, not knowing who it was. We might've been born in the same hospital, or maybe we met as toddlers. No one's memory is perfect, but for as long as I can remember, I've only known a world full of colour.

But then came the day everything changed.

My sixteenth birthday, the big day. My sweet sixteen. I didn't like pop culture or superstitions, but I thought it would at least be a happy day.

I woke up to a monochromatic world.

People talk about how awesome it will be to be able to see colours, but they never talk about what happens after their soulmate dies. Sure, they know that the world will go back to black and white, but they don't say how bleak and depressing it will be.
