What am I going to do? What can I do? But whatever I choose, I need to choose now. I can't let her succumb to this fate. Whatever choice I make, I pray that god my not forsake me.
I did well in school, except for math and social skills. I didn't really have any friends except for a small group of other misfits. I was very sensitive and shy so I just kept to myself. I know the teachers usually enjoyed me in their class but they mostly felt pity whenever I entered. I was like an outcast but I didn't care about it.
Today was the day we were going to tell her. Maybe if I act like I don't know what's happening, maybe it will ease the pain. I'll get her out of this. I just need a plan. The car ride to my cousins house was filled with my dad's excitement about the wedding. "Jack," he turned to me, "make sure you keep it a surprise." I just nodded. I haven't spoken to him since I found out that my cousin was going into an arranged marriage. He said it was tradition but even I know that a loveless marriage was shameful. It was like being forced into slavery.
We have arrived . We were greeted by Aunt Rose and Uncle jake. Aunt Rose went back in to call my Cousin, Charlotte, down. I stood anxiously in the doorway. I watched as Charlotte ran down the stairs, her beautiful dress trailering behind her. I was embraced by her gentle arms and stared at her quiet face, so pure. How could something so kind and innocent have to endure such a fate. I have to save her.
I asked her if she wanted to go out for ice cream later and she agreed. We were going to go in a few hours. My father heard of us going for ice cream later and insisted he and Uncle Jake came with us. I relented having no choice. The time came for us to leave and so I told her our parents would be tagging along. She smiled and continued putting on her shoes.
Once we were all ready, we left out. As we closed the car doors, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my stomach. I held my abdomen for a few seconds before the pain stopped. I don't know where that came from. I shrugged it off and sat silently as we drove off. My dad and Uncle Jake were chattering away and Charlotte stared blankly out the window. I wonder if she already knew. I tried to take my mind off of the subject and stared out my side of the window. Wait, wasn't the ice cream place two miles back there? The pain started up again.
Entering a parking lot, we found a spot and stepped out. My eyes widened as I read the words David's Bridal in big incursive letters. I stood there like a deer in headlights. We walked in and Charlotte was wisped away by a consultant lady. While we waited in the fitting area, my dad pulled me aside. "Jake are you okay," my dad asked with concern. My hands were shaking. "I-I'm fine," I replied, trying to act like I didn't notice. My dad kept an eye on me and constantly asking if i'm okay very few minutes. I was shaking nonstop. Uncle Jake began asking too.
Charlotte came out in some dresses and I didn't comment on any of them. Two hours passed and I still haven't said a word. Charlotte came out in a beautiful golden silk dress. She was like an angel. She was an angel. "She's an angel," I said unknowingly. Charlotte blushed at my comment."So he can talk," joked the consultant. Everyone laughed. We all agreed on the dress and brought it home with us.
When we arrived back at the house, we all sat in the living room with me and Charlotte next to each other on one of the couches. Uncle Jake looked at her and the room fell silent. "Honey," he said, "you're going to be getting married to our neighbor's son next month." I've ever seen Charlotte look so serious. "You're joking right," she asked, forcing out a chuckle. Uncle Jake shook his head. "Dad this isn't funny," she said. "I'm not joking," he said, this time matching her straight face. My cousin began to cry. "See," started my dad, "tears of joy, just like I said" Our parents looked at each other like they had won a prize or something. "May the tradition live on," my Aunt Rose said with joy.
I watched her cry and I couldn't bear it. I grabbed my cousin close and held her. Eventually I began to cry too. "No," I yelled in anger, "I can't let you get married!" My dad, Uncle Jake, and Aunt Rose stopped their cheers and looked at me like I had gun. "What did you just say," my father looked at me, "What did you just say!" "No!" I snapped like a cornered snake, "this isn't right and you know it! You know Charlotte wants to marry someone she chooses, that she loves!" "Charlotte doesn't know what she wants," said Aunt Rose like she was scolding an ill-mannered child. Charlotte shot back "I know what I want and I don't want this! Especially not with that demon of a son our neighbor has!"
I looked up and found a belt in her father's hand clenched tightly. "You will be getting married," he said in fury, "You will be carrying on our sacred tradition. I will not let you taint our lines." Charlotte wasn't having it. "The only thing tainted is your morals!" she replied like rebuking a demon. Wham! Wham! I jumped at the sound and found Charlotte on the floor. Then, everyone turned to me. Aunt Rose dragged Charlotte upstairs. My father and Uncle Jake dragged me to my room and beat me unconscious. The last thing I heard was my father's voice repeating, "May god forsake you."
I woke up to find all of my things gone and a note reading, "Until you come to your senses, you don't deserve such luxury." I heard screaming in Charlotte's room and two voices, Uncle Jake and some other unfamiliar male voice. I tried to run out to her but my door was locked. Those bastards made sure I could get to her. I need to save her. I rammed at the door as hard as I could and still no luck. I banged and pushed and screamed. I tired myself out. I sat on the floor, exhausted. After a while, I heard my door unlock and open. It as my dad and some random guy. "Jack," my dad said "I'd like you to meet your future cousin-in-law, Brett." Brett laughed and said, "So this is the little traitor." Then, Brett leaned in closer to me and whispered, "I can't wait to put your little tramp of a cousin in her place- under me." He chuckled. I chuckled back and said, "Nice to meet you too a-hole." I was beaten until I was blinded by my own blood.
Once they were done, they left my limpless body where it was and walked out like kids leaving a candy store and my blood was the candy. They'll go to hell for this. They'll burn for every sin they have committed against me, against Charlotte! I have to save Charlotte. I have to save her. I haven't been able to think of anything else. I wasn't able to think of anything else.
It's been almost a full month. I slowly began to lose my sanity. I've done nothing but non stop banging and charging into the door until I collapsed. I could feel the pain of my daily beatings anymore. In fact, I just laughed the moment they enter. I found it hysterical. The moment they left, I just continued attacking the door. I barely ate, and when I did, I ate like a savage pyrannah. Over time, no one dared to enter. As they say, "I was like a soul trying to escape Hell." No, I was trying to enter Hell, and I have a soul to collect. It's time for them to repent.
It was the day of the wedding. I was put in thick chains to "protect the bride and groom". I sat beside my father like a pet. I tugged on my chains, but he would simply yank the chains back as if to correct a dog. I stood and watched as my cousin walked down the aisle in her beautiful, golden dress. I watched in internalized agony as she made her way to that devil she would soon have to call husband. She walked passed me. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I saw the scars and hidden bruises on her body.
They began exchanging vows and then I heard all I needed to hear-"Hell no!" I smiled so hard I had more teeth than face. My father, uncle, aunt, and the groom on the other hand were not having it. My uncle threatened her. I blink and then- Pow! My eyes opened to a fallen Charlotte, lifeless on the ground. My father let me go. I ran beside her and checked her pulse. Dead, she's dead, and they killed her! They killed her. "I can't let such a demon be part of this family," said Uncle Jake. "It's time for you to repent," I shouted and turned towards them, every single one of their sinful asses.
I lunged. I dodged every bullet. In a split second, I was over my uncle. I laughed with a smile that slowly faded away. "Please," begged Aunt Rose, "don't hurt him! We're sorry. I'm sorry!" "Why should-" I stopped. A voice behind me whispered, "Save them for me." I nodded to the unknown voice and turned to my father. "Well daddy," I said, slowly walking towards the man, holding chains in an attempt to defend himself. The chains began to wrap around him. As he struggled to get free, he fell. I held the end of the chains and pulled. I leaned down to his ear and whispered, "It's time to repent." The chains on the body were gone. All that I had left was a lifeless, blue-faced body. I turned to my uncle and aunt who stood in horror and told them, "I hope you two have a change of heart." I left with no trace of my presence.
If you know what is right, stick by it. We all know when something is definitely wrong. We all make mistakes. If you don't admit them, you're chained to your sin. Otherwise, you ought to repent.
