"By who?"
"Holly. She will never forgive you for it."
"Seriously?"
"Yes seriously."
"But I need to expose her somehow."
"Just ask her tonight about it and see what she says."
He nodded.
"But listen closely, until you come up with a good plan don't tell a soul, not even Mom. You should make Holly tell her."
"Okay thanks."
"Of course, Dad."
"So you ready to go?"
I nodded.
All the way home, I thought about my actions today. I hope that it won't blow up in my face. When we arrived, Dad made a beeline for the kitchen to help Mom make dinner. Even though I was tired, I couldn't risk running into Holly. I know I would've blurted out today's events if I was around her. So I headed out to the garden and greeted Mom on the way out. I quickly found all my brothers playing basketball together. I love that I have six brothers to harass, bug, tease, to play with and protect!
But if I'm being completely honest, Josh is my favorite brother. We've always had a special bond ever since the day we met. We're the closest brothers in age and he looks up to me and I'm not just talking about height. Mom and Dad know how close Josh and I are so they invited me to sit in when they told Josh that he was adopted. They showed him all the proof; his original birth certificate with his given full name, a picture of his birth mother for him to keep, the adoption papers and a few of the million pictures that Beth had taken that special day. (I love that my parents kept his middle name the same. That was a perfect class act!) Josh seemed to take it all well, but I knew something was up.
So when we were free to go, I secretly brought him to my room and as soon as I closed the door, he started crying. I think it was a mix of the life altering news for him, upset about not remembering his birth mother, and hearing the news that he wouldn't get the chance to meet her again because she had passed when he was a young lad. I felt like it was the perfect opportunity to tell him that I lost my birth mother too. He was shocked because he thought that Mom had been mine since day one. I really thought that Josh knew that Paula is technically my step-mom. I'm really lucky that I connect well with all my siblings, but Josh will always have a special place in my heart.
"Dylan!!" Jackson yelled at me.
"What?" I asked, looking at the group of boys in front of me.
"Oh good the old brother heard us."
"I'm not old, that's Dad."
"Good one."
"Thanks. So what's up?"
"Wanna play with us?" Joshua asked. He was spinning the ball on his finger.
"Do I want to play? Of course I do!"
"Well come on or do you need a cane?" Jack asked being a total smart arse.
"Yeah to beat you with!"
"If you can find it!"
"Shut up, Jackson!" Josh yelled at him.
Josh was standing up for me.
"Make me, Joshua!" Jack said, shoving Josh's shoulders.
I stood between them. "Guys enough. Let's play! So older versus younger?"
"We always do that!" T.J. spoke up.
"Alright fine. I'm a captain and so is Jackson Madison."
"I forgot that you had a girl middle name." T.J. said pointing and laughing at him.
