OMG shoot me, please, Mr Alby's going over THE RULES again

The text comes through in the middle of the most boring lecture I've ever sat through, and is a welcome distraction. Also improved by the fact that it's from Tommy. The hottest but straightest boy I've ever come across.

(AN: Is straightest a word? Did I just make that up? Oops...)

Tommy's actual name is Thomas Green, but everyone calls him either Greenie or Thomas. Except for me, obviously. He's one of the most popular guys in the school, and all of the girls, and some of the guys (*cough* me *cough*) have massive crushes on him. In comparison, I'm not much competition.

Someone says my name, and my head jolts up from the phone screen. I quickly read the equation on the board. "X equals 7," I say, and practically see the teacher's face droop as she realises that she can't give me a detention. I swear, some of these teachers are sadistic spawn of the devil.

The work is unbelievably boring, so I keep texting Tommy all through the lesson. It sounds so stupid, but when I'm around him I'm more comfortable than with anyone else, and I feel more like myself. We've been best friends since we were babies, and we're basically brothers. He can read me like a book when it comes to most things.

When I was trying to come out to him, I couldn't get the words out. So he just said "Newt, I know you're gay, you don't have to tell me," and went back to playing FIFA with me. I just sat, speechless, and stammered "h-how did you know?" He smirked evilly at me. "You know that time when we were seven, and we used to play families?" I nodded. "It was when you wanted to play the part of the mother and wore a dress," He promptly leapt off the sofa as I tried to hit him, and smirked again... damn, that smirk. "You fight like a girl, Newt. I can see your feminine side coming through" he declared, and doubled over laughing.

I've never kept secrets from him before, and it's practically impossible not to blurt out how I feel. Especially when we go SWIMMING together, and he's fucking TOPLESS! Just when I think I have it under control, I find another thing about him that I absolutely love. A cute freckle I hadn't noticed before. His ease and grace when he runs. The way his eyes seem to sparkle when he talks about something he is passionate about. I suppose I must look the same when I talk about him. I am turning desperate, day by day, and my insides practically combust with jealousy every time he even speaks to a girl.

The bell for lunch finally rings, and I grab my stuff and rush out of the classroom, trying to avoid the huge crowds. I make my way to the canteen and sit down at my usual table. My friend Minho sits next to me. "Hey, Minho," I say, without looking at him and focusing entirely on the chicken sandwich in front of me. "Hi Newtie," he says with a grin. I roll my eyes and go back to eating.

"Hey Newt, Minho," I hear. My head whips up so fast I almost snap my neck. "Hi Tommy," I say, with a stupid smile plastered all over my face. Then I see her. Teresa. The one who makes no secret of her crush on Thomas. With her arm around MY Tommy.

They look at eachother, all lovingly and shit, and I want nothing else but to hurl myself off the roof. No, scratch that, I want to hurl Teresa off the roof.  I force myself to get my emotions under control. My fists clench and unclench under the table.

I make an excuse and leave for the library. I sit at the back, head in hands, trying to figure everything out. Thomas has a girlfriend. Not only is she super rich, she's also a girl; two things I will (probably) never be. Thomas and Teresa. The perfect couple. The king and queen of the school.

"Newt?" I turn around, only to see Tommy standing right behind me. "You okay?" He looks genuinely concerned. "Yeah, I'm fine," I mumble. "No, you're not," he says gently. "What's wrong?" At this point, I snap. "You have a girlfriend, and you didn't even tell me!" He looks shocked. "Newt, she's not-" I silence him by holding up my hand. "Listen, Tommy, she obviously likes you and you obviously like her. I don't care whether it's 'official' or any of that shit, she may as well be your girlfriend from the way you two were acting!"

I don't hear whether he replies or not, because I'm sprinting from the library, tears streaking down my face. I run until my leg hurts too much to continue, and sink to the ground behind the English wing. Not only has Tommy got a girlfriend, he probably also hates me. Way to go, Newt. Well done for messing up your life again.

The bell for registration rings, but I don't move. I'm past caring. I've thrown away the one thing I value above anything else: Thomas's friendship. Now, I feel the consequences. The bell rings again, signalling that everyone should be in registration by now. I get up and wipe my eyes roughly. My leg pains me with every step, but my heart hurts more.

A/N: Anyone that's bothered to read this is amazing. I apologise for any mistakes, the shortness of this chapter and my uneven updating. I am currently doing my GCSEs, so I don't have much time. Patience, my friends.

Also, dedication to GreyWaves for her amazing writing! If you haven't already, read some of her stuff :)
