"Hi Mr. Bush!"
"Hi Coach."
"Oh there you are, Jackson. You owe me a mile. Um are you okay, dude?"
"My stomach hurts. I was getting tums from my favorite sister."
"Oh that's sweet of you, Jack! Thanks!" I said with a smile and gave him two tablets.
"Okay you got your medicine. Get back to the track."
Jack nodded and ran out of the room.
"Thanks Axel."
"No problem. Was he bugging you?"
"Yeah, but I took care of it. So do you need something?"
"Do I need a reason to visit the prettiest girl in school?"
"No, I guess not."
"I got everything I need right here."
He cupped my face and passionately kissed me. "I missed you!"
"We just saw each other in the teacher's lounge like forty minutes ago."
"It felt a lot longer to me."
I smiled.
"So will I be lucky enough to see you at the baseball tryouts today?"
"Yeah I'll be there. But ease up on my brother, okay?"
"Okay. Um would you wanna catch happy hour afterwards? I mean it's cool if you don't drink. We could grab coffee or tea instead."
"Sounds like your asking me out, Mr. Bush."
"I am."
"Yes to a date with you and to whatever beverage you want."
"Cool, cool. See you later, Nurse Lily."
As I watched him leave, a light went off in my head. "Mr. Bush!"
He peaked his head into the doorway. "Yes?"
"I just remembered that I have to babysit today. So rain check?"
"Tell you what. Leave everything to me. I'll get you out of watching my nieces and nephews today."
"Okay thanks."
"Of course. Anything for you, girl!"
Suddenly the bell ran and I jumped. I've been working here for a few years now and it always seems to scare me.
"Well that's my cue. See you on the diamond!"
(I gotta ask Jack later if that's a baseball reference.)
"Not if I see you first!"
He waved and smiled at me before closing the door. I walked to my desk and collapsed in my chair. Axel and I grew up together, but I always felt like he was off-limits being my nanny's brother. I just hope she approves of Axel and I dating. Her opinion matters a lot to me.
The rest of the school day went by fast, that I was surprised when the last bell rang. I looked up and saw that it was exactly three. A smile appeared on my face as I gathered my belongings, turned off the lights, closed and locked the door behind me. Then I made a beeline out to the baseball field. I saw Jack warming up and Axel doing his thing.
Suddenly I heard someone call my name. I looked up to meet Avery's gaze. So I smiled at her as she waved me over to come sit with my high schooled aged siblings.
I waved at the three of them. "Hi guys!"
"Hey Lily!" Avery exclaimed with a smile.
"So how was school today?" I asked in general.
