Fem!Reader x Merida

Prologue

Merida and Y/n play hide-and-seek around the camp. As they giggle and chase each other, they bring smiles to everyone around. Queen Elinor joins their game and the girls hide under a table laden with food.

"Where are you? I'm coming to get you!" the Queen calls playfully. The two girls giggle. "Where are you, you little rascals?"

Queen Elinor looks under the table to see Y/n scrambling to get away. Elinor runs around the edge of the table to catch you. Succeeding, she begins to tickle Y/n, making you shriek with laughter. She then places Y/n on the grass and continues to look for her daughter.

"Where is my little birthday girl, hm? I'm going to gobble her up when I find her!"

Merida tries sneaking up on her mum, making Y/n giggle. Elinor turns around and chases Merida for a bit before catching her as well.

"I'm going to eat you!" the young queen teases as she pretends to eat Merida.

Y/n runs up and tries to rescue Merida as she's being devoured. Merida was almost free from her mother's arms when her father puts his bow on the table.

"Och! Fergus, no weapons on the table," Elinor scolds.

Merida and Y/n run up to the table, excited. "Can I shoot an arrow?" she asks and you help her pull the bow off the table. "Can I? Can I? Can I? Can I? Please, can I?" You both laugh as you fall backwards, pinned by the large bow.

"Not with that," Fergus laughs, "Why not...use you very own!" He produces a smaller, light tan bow. "Happy birthday, my wee darlin'!"

Merida's face lights up as she takes the bow. Y/n tugs her over to a target that you saw being set up earlier. "Come on! Come on! Come on! Shoot it!" You say excitedly.

Merida's parents walk over to the target and Fergus begins to teach her how to shoot.

"Now there's a good girl. Draw all the way back to your cheek." Elinor and Y/n watch with anticipation as Merida struggles to pull the bowstring back. "That's right, keep both eyes open and...loose!"

Merida fires, missing the target by a wide margin. Her face falls. "I missed."

"Go and fetch it then," Elinor encourages.

Merida hands her the bow and runs off with Y/N into the woods. You both jump over roots and run small hands through bushes as you run down the hill. The forest quickly grows dark as the sun is blocked by leaves. The girls look around in wonder; neither of you had wandered this far into the woods unsupervised. Merida spots her arrow and runs to it, pulling it out of the tree. You both jump as branches crack and break nearby. The forest grows silent as you step closer to Merida. After hearing a soft sigh-like noise, you both whip around. You see a softly glowing creature, floating about a meter off the ground.

"A wil-o-the-wisp," Merida whispers in awe.

"Wow," you breath.

You chase after Merida, who goes up to it. She tries to touch it, but it vanishes.

"They are real..." she whispers to herself.

As you catch up, Merida's already running up a hill, following a trail of wisps.

"Wait up!" you shout. Merida laughs.

As you crest the hill, you hear her parents calling to her. Your own parents are also looking for you. When you reach them, you tell them what you saw. Your parents go along with your excitement as they pack up. Hearing Merida scream, your family turns to see a huge bear rising up. You father grabs his spear, cursing his inattentiveness. You mother scoops you up and runs for the pack horse. The queen and Merida are close behind. You hear the battle, but dare not look back.

A/N: I know this chapter is pretty much verbatim of the first scene of the movie, but this fic gets more original in the later chapters.
I'll publish the second chapter soon. There's still a few kinks I need to iron out.
