Reason Three

Tania sits in front of us and says, “You two get along easily, aren’t you?” she takes a slice of pizza and munches it.

I snicker. “Yes, we are actually long lost best friend and you unite us again.”

That suppose to be a joke, but Tania seems to take it seriously because her eyes widen and she turns to Clinton and I back and forth before her eyes rest on Clinton. She says, “Clinton, really?”

Clinton’s eyebrows furrow and he looks at me with a look that seems to scream a what are you doing and I just wink innocently. Clinton rolls his eyes and back to Tania, he says, “No, we just met today. This guy seems like he loves to make fun of people.”

And I gain a pout from Tania Green. Yes.

We eat in silent because basically there is nothing else we could do. Well, I’m okay with it. As long as there is pizza, I’m okay even if some enormous creepy giants surround me. But then, after all of the pizza gone, I need someone to talk to. Gladly, Tania is never running out of topics. She starts another topic—no, actually it isn’t a new topic, it is still just about Ellen’s challenge. She asks, “Does Gray give you a deadline?”

Immediately knowing it is about Ellen’s 20 reasons challenge, I simply just shake my head. “No. Maybe no. She didn’t tell me anything.”

“Oh,” Tania nods. “So you’ve got like the rest of your life?”

“The rest of our life,” I correct her. “But hell no, I don’t want to spend all my life thinking of reasons for Ellen. I want to spend it all with her by my side.”

“What if you need the rest of your life, anyway?” Clinton asks abruptly. This guy. I thought he was my friend. Now I hate him. Clinton, don’t you dare ruin my life.

“Then nothing.” I flinch a bit when answering. But, really, I never thought I need the rest of my life to show Ellen how I love her so much. It can’t be that long, right? Ellen will accept me eventually, right?

What if no.

No, Carter. Stop yourself.

“You’ve only got, what, a reason?” Tania says.

“Two reasons, though,” I correct her.

She leans on the back of her chair, sighing, and places her head on it, eyes looking at the ceiling. “You still need eighteen reasons more, then. Can you really do it?”

Tania, don’t ruin my spirit.

She then snaps back to me, eyes widening. “Wait, two reasons? I thought you only have one!”

“I thought you thought I only have one reason,” I reply sarcastically.

“I thought you thought I thought you only have one reason,” Tania counters.

“I thought you thought I thought you thought I only have one reason,” I counter back again. What, does Tania want to have a fight with me? Then come on, let’s have some word fight. Welcome to a fight between Sarcasm Master Carter Williams and Innocent Creature Tania Green.

I see Tania is about to counter my word again when Clinton cuts us off. “Oh shut up,” he grunts.

And this is Mr. Clinton Wright, our precious referee.

Tania and I turn to him with a questioning look and Clinton says, “Don’t be childish, you two.”

“Excuse me, Mr. Wright,” I lean back, folding my arms. “I am fighting with a childish you fall in love with.”
