Ok so this is the first thing I've ever published everywhere. I like writing but don't really show it to many people. I will accept constructive criticism and if you see something wrong please say it. But please dont be rude about it. Also RN im trying to learn Korean and Japanese so there will be alot of Korean and Japanese customs, traditions and words in this story

Gyojin Background: Gyojin also know as fish people have existed since the ice age.

Where They Came From: When the glaciers that covered Canada near Hudson Bay (from the ice age) started melting eggs frozen within those glaciers were released. Some of those eggs ended up in the bay. After thet hatched they grew into the Gyojin.

How They Ended Up Near Japan: The Gyojin stayed in northern Canada growing their tribe. For the better part of 500 years before small groups split off and left to travel the ocean and discover new places. Some of which made their way to the Mariana Trench.

What is Their Society Like: They have a very complex and very difference society from us they don't have leaders, socioeconomic status or even parents. When the female lays the eggs she lays them in a protective "nest" set into the side of a cliff or ledge underwater.

The eggs take around 3-5 months before they hatch. From when the first egg hatches the siblings stay together. When the siblings are young the older members of the tribe help the children grow and teach them how to cultivate plants and hunt for food.

Once the siblings are old enough they build their own home themselves amongst the homes of the other members of their tribe and grow together until their old enough to mate after they start choosing mates they split up and travel south to warmer waters to reproduce.

They return home and build a nest for the female to lay her eggs in. After that mates live together on one of the villages near the nest where they layed their eggs but they likely would never know who their children were.

Ways of Communication: They have a few different ways of communication and like humans it differes depending on where you are. The maing form of communication they have are bioluminesent lights they have down both sides of their neck their arms and scattered across their tails. They light them up in different sequences patterns and colors to communicate.

Another way of communication they had was writing not in the traditional sense they dont have permanent writing. What they have is a mixture of thick mud and squid ink to darken that they spread on large stones and carve shapes into it. But they don't so it often because its a very unreliable way to communicate. Although they do carve stories into slabs of stone.

Their third way of communicating is speaking in to human sense. They learned a long time ago that the strange noises that humans make are a form of communication. They learned what the words meant and how to mimic them to speak their language. Of course they can only speak when above water and they dont do that often.

Can They Leave The Water: Yes they can for around 12 hours ata time they have gills like fish but also a trachea like humans and can breathe like them. When they dont need it the trachea seals shut so no water get into their lungs.

They can also morph or change into a "human" similar in a way to how catapillars change into butterflies except its reversable. They have similar to pores on their arms neck and around their waist which they release the substance that sort of feels like honey it hardens into a plasticish substance.

They coat their whole bodies with it and while inside their bodies shift into a humanish form although they dont have genders so they look androgynous. To reverse it its the same process but they have to be underwater. When on land their gills close in a similar fashion to their trachea when underwater.

Description: I didn't want to put a description in because im not good at the so this is probably going to be bad i apologise in advance for it. The humans are all Japanese except Mathias and his father who are from America originally.

The Gyojin dont look like mermaids from tv at all they look very different. Their scales don't stop at their waists they come up their sides and their is a fin up along thejr spine the scales cover the sides of their face as well. Facial features are similar to humans but sharper. They have hair but it dosent grow like human hair it is usually short and fuzzy like cat hair sort of.

Individual gyojin look different from they have characteristics of different fish though siblings usually look similar to each other. The charcteristics they have are not just in look they have the same attacks and defenses as those fish. For example an octopus based gyojin would have tentables and suction cups their hands would have very strong grip and they release ink. Thats about it for the description (Inoris and his sister both have a lion fish base).
