Chapter 1

Eight years after Lily's death

The day was gloomy and rainy. Ryder thought the weather fit the day and his mood to a T. Today September 15th marked the eight year anniversary of Lily's death. The death that Ryder felt like was all his fault.

In the years since her death the hands had learned not to piss him off on this day because he was always in a foul mood, and they didn't want to deal with his temper. The boss could be real hot headed when he wanted to be and that was one side of him you didn't want to mess with. It was already bad enough that one of the horses had been spooked by the weather and broken through the door of its stall.

Now the people at the feed and hardware store were going to have to deal with Ryder while he got the supplies to fix it. They hoped that he wouldn't do any damage to sweet Paisley, the stores owner's daughter.

Paisley was one of the sweetest people you were likely to ever meet. She was about five foot seven with chesnut brown hair and a smile that was so sweet that it kept men coming to the store just so they could see it. Her green-grey eyes always had a little glint in them most people took it as another example of her sweetness, but in all reality it was her fiery temper very well masked.

The store was calm and quiet when Ryder arrived at the store. It wasn't too busy, there were probably at least ten other people in the store. Ryder hoped that no one would try and talk to him because he was in a foul mood, and he knew he would probably snap at them.

When Ryder came into the store, Paisley saw him and she made the wrong choice to go up to him and ask him if he needed help finding anything.

With a smile on her face she walked up to Ryder, "Hello, I'm Paisley, do you need help finding anything?"

Ryder lost it, and he snapped, "No, I'm fine. If I need help then I'll ask. Just leave me the hell alone. Can't you tell when a person wants to be left alone?"

It takes a lot to piss Paisley off and this idiot managed to do it in less than a minute. She was pissed, and about ready to blow. "Hey there mister I don't know who the hell you think you are, but you will not come into my store and treat me like trash. Now I want you to leave and don't come back!"

Ryder stood there looking dumbfounded and his anger was now renewed. This girl had a temper just like Lily's. So instead of arguing more with her he muttered a string of cuss words a walked out the door to his truck.

A couple seconds later the hum of the trucks engine could be heard and Ryder was speeding away.

Paisley didn't know what to think of that idiot of a cowboy. How dare he come into her store and act that way. All she'd been trying to do was help him. Men were such idiots, and Paisley should know because she'd dealt with her fair share of them in the past.

One of Paisley's employees walked up to her as she was fuming, and asked, "You alright boss?"

Paisley turned around to speak to him and tried not to snap. So as calm as she could, Paisley said, "I'm fine, go and get back to work Travis." Paisley watched him walk away as he shook his head as if he found the whole situation comical. She needed a break, and she needed one now.

With that thought she went out back to go and find a place where she could calm down.

Behind the store there was a huge oak tree and sometimes when Paisley needed a break or just time to clear her head she would go there. The tree had been like a refuge to her since she was a little girl.
