"You'd think after running and sneaking around every day for five years, I'd be in better shape than this..." Nico muttered under his breath, panting with his hands on his knees.
He heard Mrs. O'Leary, his pet monkey, let out a couple squeaks from the floor beside him.
"You don't know either, huh?" Nico murmured, bending down to give her a small piece of bread that he had scored from his little theft run today.
He walked over to the window of his small hideout, shielding his eyes from the bright sun as he stared at the palace. "I would give anything to live there... I know I say that every day, Leary," he said, using his nickname for her, "but I mean it. I'd get all the food I could eat... That and the fact that the prince is hot as hell..." He couldn't help the pink tint that came to his face whenever he thought about Prince Will.
Nico was as gay as gay could be. It was weird, because he only wore two types of clothing: black and rainbow. Weird combination. Both were hard to find in this Middle Eastern world, but somehow he managed it. He sometimes got strange looks in the market from his clothing, and he had to admit, it was a bit obvious to the guards who he was. They could recognize him really quickly.
After a while of looking at the palace, he said, "C'mon, Leary, we're going back to the market. See if we can collect anything more today."
Famous last words. No more than an hour later, Nico was being chased by not one, not two, but five guards. "Just gotta keep one jump ahead of the lawmen!" He panted out to Mrs. O'Leary. "These guys don't appreciate we're broke!"
He could hear the guards yelling out names behind him, such as, "Riffraff," "Streetrat," and "Scoundrel."
"It's just a little snack, guys!" He yelled, while Mrs. O'Leary squeaked in agreement.
"Rip him open, take it back guys!" The head guard screamed in response.
As Nico ran by each vendor, he could hear everyone muttering to each other, especially one who said, "Still I think he's rather tasty!"
Nico's face puckered like he had eaten something sour. "Disgusting!" He yelled over his shoulder.
Nico was a bit of an odd person. He was usually reserved, shy, quiet, to-the-point person, but for some reason he was very open about being gay. No one knows why that is.
He eventually managed to evade the guards, by taking his shortcuts around the kingdom. Once he got to his hideout, he began to think to himself, like he did a lot of days.
"Riffraff... Streetrat?" He shook his head. "I don't buy that... If only they would just look closer... Would they see a poor gay boy? No, they'd find out there's so much more to me..." He paused. "Well, maybe not so much more than my gayness, but more than a poor boy!"
Nico's parents and sister had died around six years before. His mother, Maria; his father, Hades; and his sister, Bianca, were all killed by a man named Saturn. Yeah, strange name. For some reason, that name didn't sound right to Nico, so he had always believed it was a code name for something else...
He missed his parents horribly, his sister too. His mother was a lovely woman. She wasn't Arabian originally, she was Italian. That is why Nico was paler than most of the people in Agrabah. His father was from a kingdom near Agrabah, maybe called Abooboo? No, Ababwa? Nico wasn't completely sure.
His sister was a few years older than him. She was fifteen when she died, Nico was only twelve. It being six years later, she would have been twenty-one, and Nico was eighteen now. She didn't like traditional girl activities. She liked to play with animals, like Mrs. O'Leary, she liked her father to teach her how to use weapons, like bows and arrows which weren't very common in Agrabah.
He got offended when people would say it was his parent's fault that he was a thief, because it wasn't.
He hadn't gotten the chance to come out to them before their deaths, which made him sad to think about. He hadn't completely realized what he was back then. Whenever his father criticized the prince for getting to live in such splendor when they had to live poor, Nico had found himself getting defensive for no reason. Nowdays, he realized it was because he had feelings, a crush, on the Prince of Agrabah.
It's like how kids today say they have a celebrity crush, this is how Nico felt. He was one of the poorest lads in the city, and Will was the richest. Nothing could ever happen between them, considering Nico could never even get close enough to meet the Prince. Besides, he was a prince, he was most likely straight. Plus, not many people were gay in Agrabah, Nico thought he was the only one.
But he still stared at the palace. He couldn't stop.
