Tainted Proposal

This is the day. I’ve finally decided- I can’t imagine myself without her. She’s my everything. The very thought of her with another man is unbearable. I’m gonna marry her. I’m gonna propose today.

I stood up from my good night sleep with a smile drawn on my face. It’s embarrassing to admit, but I’m excited- way too much..maybe it’s also the nervousness. I would never know her response to this unexpected proposal. Imagining her solemn face being painted with tears- tears of joy. I would never make her cry- that’s what I promised her. But maybe, this day would be an exemption.

I wore my black long sleeves shirt. I know today should be a lively and ecstatic day, but what should I do? She likes it when I wear this. He even calls me ‘his Hunk’. The thought of it makes me laugh all the time.

“Good morning, Honey.” I said mirthfully through my mobile phone.

“Hey Hon, you’re so early?” she sounded sleepy.

“Rise and shine Love..you have your class at 8, right?” She’s a teacher at the Daycare.

“Yeah..” then I heard her sighed.

                “You alright?”

“Yep..what are you up to anyway?” she said teasingly.

“Nothing..” I sounded like a 4-year-old telling her Mom a lie.

“Really? Well, I better be in the shower..”

“I’ll get you at 12. I love you.” I told her.

“Love you, too.” then she hang up.

I walked my way to the flower shop. I bought a bouquet of blue roses- her favorite. I reached for my wallet for the cash when I realized something- shoot! I forgot my phone.

I checked the time- 10 o’clock. I needed to buy a ring and have the reservation at the resto. Well, Meg is more important than anything else. I decided not to go back for my phone.

I went next to the jewelry shop. I had a hard time picking the right ring for her.

“Good morning, Sir. How can I help you?” the sales lady said gracefully. She was maybe in her 20’s, wearing the blue skirt and suit. She really looked more like a flight attendant than a seller. Well, I appreciated her offer so I smiled.

“Well, maybe you could help me choose a ring for my girlfriend..” I said timidly.

“Maybe you would like our best-seller here, Sir.” she was too polite. She then opened the glass-made stands and got the red carpeted box.

The moment she opened the box, I felt sure that was the right one.

The ring was simple, yet elegant. It has small stones formed into a rose. It was adorned.

                “I’ll take it.” I mouthed.

“Right away, Sir.” the lady said with an augmented smile.

I opened my wallet just to be disappointed. I forgot my card on the nightstand.

“I’m sorry, but can you just hold the ring for me? I’ll be back, I’ll just get my card.” I  said apologetically and rushed back to my apartment.

I was gonna reach for my card, when suddenly, my phone vibrated.

I’ve reached for it first, and then I froze. My jaw dropped..my vision was blurring.

My heart was racing..I can’t think clearly.

The next thing I knew, I was running..running so fast. I didn’t mind the persons I’ve bumped into. It’s like the road was a never-ending one. I felt like screaming..I felt alone. My heart wants to explode. My emotions are indefinable now. All I want is to disembark there..

I've reached the place breathless. I've searched everywhere..I’ve searched for that face..but my vision is blurry..my wet eyes makes it hard to see.

And then I saw her..I just found myself slumped on the floor. I can’t speak. I want to yell..all I can do now is cry.

“Drew..” her brother reached for me. He led me up and towards her..I was shaking now.

Her somber face was full of purple-bruises..dried blood-stains.

Her perfect, round eyes were closed shut.

Her pink lips were now pale and dry.

Her emotions were all gone.

I reached for her hand..and it was cold. Her lifeless body lied there in the hospital bed.

The woman I’ll marry..the woman I’ll be proposing to tonight, is gone.

If only I’ve returned for my phone..If only I’ve read her messages earlier, this would never have happened. She would be by myside right now..hugging me and wearing the ring I should have bought.

This is Nurse Leo, there has been an accident involving the owner of this phone. Please come to the St. John’s Medical Center. Thank you.

I never thought this black long sleeves is really not for the proposal, but for her death.
